First Wild Gray Wolf in California for a Century

When a lone gray wolf trotted across the border into California on Thursday, a little bit of history was made. That?s because this was the first wild wolf to appear in the state in close to a hundred years. The young wolf was first spotted leaving the rest of his pack behind in Oregon in September.

Known to conservationists as ?0R7,? the two-and-a-half year-old male was tracked via his GPS collar several miles inside California?s northern border. The news is being seen as a victory amongst environmentalists and wildlife agencies. Charlton H. Bonham, director of the California Department of Fish and Game, told the San Francisco Chronicle:

?Whether one is for it or against it, the entry of this lone wolf into California is an historic event and the result of much work by the wildlife agencies in the West. If the gray wolf does establish a population in California, there will be much more work to do here.?

Not everybody is so ecstatic. Concerned farmers and ranchers are worried the reappearance of wolves in California will threaten the safety of livestock. In California, wolves have long been listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act, so shooting a wolf is out of the question. Local cattle rancher Jack Hanson says only the law is holding ranchers back:

?We do not welcome the wolf back in California. We would like to put a big shield up and keep him out, no doubt. [...] If there were no regulations, our family would shoot them on sight so that they did not multiply.?

However, others contend a lone wolf is not a threat, and that livestock are only targeted by packs of wolves. Assistant regional director of ecological services for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Pacific Southwest region Mike Fris told the Chronicle a single wolf is ?more likely to be feeding on carcasses than livestock. He?s the only wolf we know of in the state of California at the moment.?

Although livestock may be endangered by packs of wolves, the gray wolf is not known to target humans, with the rare few attacks in history attributed to rabies or starvation.

0R7 is the only wolf in California right now, but that?s expected to change. The gray wolf population has been on the rise in the States in recent years. In 1999, a lone wolf crossed the border into Oregon, and the state now has almost thirty gray wolves, divided into four packs. Good to see a species actually thriving for once!

Leaked Twitter Subpoena Raises Online Privacy Issues (Mashable)

The leaked subpoena sent to Twitter this month by the Suffolk District Attorney's Office in Boston is causing some hoopla on the web and raising the issue of law enforcement's access to online personal data. On Dec. 14, the D.A.'s Office issued a subpoena to Twitter in order to access the account information of two users who tweeted a list of personal information they allegedly obtained by hacking into the Boston Police Patrolmens' Association. The hackers stole identifying information and Tweeted it to followers. The subpoena requests "available subscriber information, for the account or accounts associated with the following information, including IP address logs for account creation."

[More from Mashable: Twitter 2012: Bigger and More Ads]

In the subpoena, assistant D.A. Benjamin A. Goldberger requests that the investigation be kept from the Twitter users as to not impede the ongoing probe. But the information was leaked. We reached out to Twitter for comment, but have yet to hear back.

On Dec. 23 one of the accounts under investigation, @p0isAn0N Tweeted, "Haha. Boston PD submitted to Twitter for my information. Lololol? For what? Posting info pulled from public domains? #comeatmebro."

[More from Mashable: Today?s Top Stories: GoDaddy Woes, Twitter Lawsuit, No-Glasses 3D]

The D.A.'s office requested details of two Twitter users and also listed the name Guido Fawkes, which is the name but not handle listed for one of the accounts under investigation, as well as the hashtags #BostonPD and #d0xcak3.

One of the accounts being probed is listed in the subpoena as @OccupyBoston, however that account appears to be inactive. It's likely they meant @Occupy_Boston, which Tweets about the occupy movement. Targeting this account has lead some to speculate that the police are monitoring the online activity of occupy protestors.

Twitter's website contains an information section for law enforcement. It states that if a subpoena is issued for a user's information, the company will inform that user before they hand the information to the authorities, unless it is prevented from doing so by court order or statute. According to its site, Twitter was following protocol by informing the user of the subpoena, and, perhaps later providing that user's information to the Boston D.A. This isn't the first time Twitter has been reluctant to hand-over user information to law enforcement.

It's possible Twitter does host some personal information about the owners of the accounts who tweeted the hacked materials. At the very least, it might have IP addresses. However, Twitter doesn't verify identities or email addresses of its users, so using Twitter for detective work might be more harmful than helpful to an investigation, especially if the subpoena is leaked. We contacted the Boston District Attorney's Office and are waiting for a reply.

Do you think Twitter should surrender user information for hackers? Please tell us in the comments.

Rick Perry Blasts Obama For Not Hosting Parade For Returning U.S. Troops

"Mr. President, our soldiers come first"

thehill

GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry criticized President Obama on Wednesday for not arranging a parade to welcome U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq.

The Texas governor, who has struggled since entering the GOP primary, accused Obama of not properly thanking the military.

"It really disturbs me that nearly after nine years of war in Iraq that this president wouldn?t welcome home our many heroes with a simple parade in their honor," Perry said at a campaign stop in Iowa

.

"Maybe it?s because this war is unpopular with the Democrats. I don?t know. But Mr. President, our soldiers come first. And it comes before party politics. We need to welcome our soldiers home. Give them that parade. Give them that pat on the back. Tell them thank you for the freedom that we have."

Mitt Romney, Perry's rival for the GOP presidential nomination, expressed a similar concern earlier on Wednesday on Fox & Friends, saying "a welcome home ceremony of some kind makes a lot of sense.

"The men and women who sacrificed so extraordinarily over the years in Iraq, the families of those that have lost loved ones, I think deserve recognition," he said. "And so whether that's a ticker tape parade or special ceremony somewhere else welcoming our troops home is something they deserve

Tracy Baim: Cardinal George and the KKK: Religious Extremists Live in the Midwest, Too

Cardinal Francis George, Archbishop of Chicago, is not the only person hiding prejudice in the heavy robes of religion, but he is a powerful leader in the Catholic Church, and therefore his words have more meaning and power than your average street preacher or member of the church choir.

In comparing the LGBT community to the Ku Klux Klan -- in his remarks about the potential disruption and inconvenience of the new Pride Parade route and start time -- Cardinal George has gone too far, and he should graciously apologize and step down from his post.

Dozens of local and national leaders and groups have spoken out against George, and some, too, are calling for him to step down. At the very least, they are asking for an apology.

Other religious facilities have long endured the Pride Parade passing their doors on Pride Sunday, with no "anti-religious" problems reported in four decades. In fact, religious groups, including gay Catholics, have been a part of Pride almost since it began. Ironically, the KKK did march against the Pride Parade in its early years, and many spiritual people helped counter their presence.

But Cardinal George could not let the parade pass by his Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Belmont Avenue. He fought back, and did so using a vile comparison to the KKK. The Parade will still pass by the church, just at a later time. The change in time really is not what upset most LGBT people; rather, it was what George said about the KKK. He told FOX News Chicago: "You don't want the gay liberation movement to morph into something like the Ku Klux Klan, demonstrating in the streets against Catholicism."

At this point, an apology is not enough. George has proven that he is out of touch with the progress of the LGBT movement in this city and country, and he should pass the torch to a new generation of Catholic leadership. Like Joseph Cardinal Bernardin before him, George has tried to use the church's power to keep back civil rights; Bernardin lobbied against Chicago's gay-rights bill in the 1980s, and George has spoken out against gay civil unions and women's rights.

The fact is that while many people seek out religion as a safe haven, where they can do good work to help their neighbors, often church leadership seeks to divide rather than bring people together. Given that this was Christmas season, George's remarks stung particularly hard. Enough is enough, and George should not be allowed to take this hateful approach and still be a leader in his church.

What is most upsetting when religious leaders speak out, and even lobby, against laws that protect LGBT people is that they do so on an uneven playing field. Most are wealthy beyond our imagination, own properties on valuable land, and yet they pay few, if any, taxes. This not only makes it more difficult to fund our schools, police and fire departments, and other public services, but it also places a heavier burden on every other citizen, religious or not. They get to have their free speech cake and not pay taxes, too.

Personally, I feel that if all religious groups paid their fair share of property, income, and other taxes, I wouldn't be as angry when they spoke out against my right to equality. We would be equals stating our own opinions. But when a religious leader like Cardinal George gets to have a large forum to amplify his prejudice, and he does so off all our taxpayer backs, it is an unfair system.

The initial separation of church and state in this country was based on a strong need to eliminate potential harassment and undue influence over religion. But the opposite has happened. Religious groups influence our politics, and they do so with impunity from the law, and from the tax system.

Cuban MBAs? A Spanish School Hopes to Train Havana's Future Moguls (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in Am?ricaEconom?a.

(HAVANA) -- Even before Cuba began cracking its doors open to capitalism, Paulino Garcia always displayed an entrepreneurial spirit. He spent two years at a university in the Soviet Union before returning to his native Cuba to continue his law studies at the University of Havana. After working for a firm called Climex, Garcia eventually managed to open his own restaurant in 1996, thanks to a new law introduced that allowed people to work for themselves.

"I built it from nothing, and with a lot of sacrifice," Garcia says. "I really wanted to have my own restaurant."

When Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino told Jos? Luis Mendoza, the president of the Catholic University (UCAM) in Murcia, Spain, that all of the administrators and owners of small businesses in Cuba needed to go to business school, he was thinking about people like Garcia. (See how the Catholic Church is making a comeback in Cuba.)

At the end of 2010, Raul Castro's government changed the rules and opened up the economy to a small amount of private business. In November, it announced that barber shops and small cafeterias would become private, and that he would allow an expansion in the number of small restaurants like Garcia's. Now people are starting to realize that running a business requires more than just intuition and common sense.

"The cardinal was reflecting on this need, and our president offered to help fill it," says Gonzalo Wandosell, the vice-dean at the Business Management School at UCAM.

The classes began on Sept. 26 in a symbolic building: the old seminary of San Carlos and San Ambrosio, founded in 1689 and home to the Cultural Center of Father Felix Varela. Wandosell indicated that the 45 founding students come from both state-run companies and private companies, and that there is no requirement for students to be Catholic. "They are engineers, lawyers and economists."

The Church's role in the new MBA program has been substantial. Since 1959, the Cuban clergy has been enemy No. 1 of the revolution, although the Church-state relationship has improved substantially since then, especially after Pope John Paul II's 1998 visit. (See pictures from Fidel Castro's years in power.)

On the other hand, the financing for the project has come from a Spanish university, the colonial power up until 1898, which many Cubans still refer to as the Motherland. The connections between the two countries didn't chill in the wake of the Communist revolution, with Spanish investment in Cuba still strong today.

In contrast to the costly programs in other countries, the Cuban MBA is free for students, with the costs covered by the University and donations from businesses in Murcia.

According to Wandosell, the Spaniards are taking care of the instructors' salaries and travel expenses, while the Church "supplies the buildings and coordinates with local instructors," as their director, father Yosvani Carvajal, said.

It isn't the first program of its type attempted Cuba. The Argentinian Business School ADEN tried it first, and was followed by a series of other high-profile trials and failures.

The innovation in the UCAM program is that it is the only one directed exclusively towards entrepreneurs and sole proprietors. That is not the case at the MBA program at the University of Havana, where students must be employed by an official state business to be accepted. (See "Cuba's Big Layoffs: What to Do with the Unemployed?")

Not Recognized at Home
Majel Reyes Quesada, an MBA student with a Bachelor's degree in English, said he had practical reasons for wanting to do the program. "I see myself doing something in the future, with the possible new economic opening," he said. "Maybe I'll create a small business."

This is a typical student profile, and it can explain the pragmatic character of the curriculum. "In Spain we would call it professional master's degree," explains Wandosell. "It offers advanced training in business management, but is very orientated toward small and very small businesses and cooperatives, which are the type of enterprises that are being started in Cuba."

In spite of the recent reforms, there are still substantial obstacles for potential entrepreneurs on the island nation. On the one hand, the list of authorized activities precludes Cubans from opening businesses likely to grow large. For example, a book-repair shop is ok, but a publishing house is not. An artisan bricklayer can open his or her own business, but not a construction company. No such company can open while Cuba's constitution specifies that "the economic system is based on socialist principles." (See "Cuba?s Communist Codgers Keep Control.")

In addition, there is no credit or micro-credit system. Without any access to start-up funds, entrepreneurship opportunities remain limited; and finding funding can be a major obstacle even for people with family abroad. And although the Communist Party passed a resolution during their most recent congress to liberalize the wholesale markets, the reforms have yet to be implemented.

Is this the back door to Cuba's capitalist tradition? Father Carvajal offers the Church's non-ideological position: "It is for Cuba's benefit. The graduates are for Cuba."

At the end of their program, the MBA students will have a degree recognized in the European Union, but not in their own country. The Education Ministry will not officially sanction the program until it is paired with a Cuban university.

The attack took place in the city of Sapele, as about 50 children were gathered for an Arabic class.

Delta State police spokesman Charles Muka said that the attackers drove by a school and threw homemade explosives into a classroom Tuesday morning.

Story: Nigeria fears more bombs after 39 killed in Christmas attacks

The wounded children were all aged younger than nine, Reuters reported. At least one was aged four.

Investigators suspect a local vigilante group was behind the incident, Muka added.

The latest incident follows coordinated attacks by radical Islamist militants on Christmas Day, which killed at least 39 people.

Analysts say the attacks risk reviving sectarian violence between the mostly Muslim north and Christian south, which has claimed thousands of lives in the past decade.

The radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram? has claimed responsbility for the church attacks. Boko Haram aims to impose Islamic Shariah law across Nigeria.

Many northern Nigerian Christians fear the Christmas Day bombings could lead to a religious war in Africa's most populous country.

Meanwhile, a family of four was killed in a machete attack on Wednesday in Nigeria's ethnically and religiously mixed Plateau state ? on the threshold of the country's largely Muslim north and its mostly Christian south.

There was no immediate suggestion the killings had any link to Sunday's church bombings.

Eccentric Eastern European Automotive Artist Conjures Classic Car ...

Slovenian artist Miha Furlan has ?been on his game? for many years, creating some of the most?eye catching?automotive art that I have ever seen. ?While his focus is always on cars, it is almost never on the same car twice. ?Everything from vintage racers to current supercars, and even bespoke commissions, have seen the deft tip of Miha?s markers, pencils, pens, and watercolor brushes.

While his vision is not entirely limited, it seems that when it comes down to what he enjoys focusing on is the early to mid 1970s international sports car and open wheel scene. ?Certainly not a bad scene to focus on. ?The 1970s were an interesting time in motor racing history. ?While the performance of many road cars completely disappeared in this period, it seemed that all of that performance simply reappeared in the engine bays of racing cars, and they got more powerful with each passing year.

In addition to producing some of the best racing cars of all time, the 1970s produced some of the best racing drivers of all time as well. ?It was the perfect environment to catch the attention of even young enthusiasts.

From this cross section of Mr. Furlan?s artistic endeavors, it is immediately clear that he is a fan of the history of places like Le Mans, Monaco, and the Sicilian Targa Florio. ?Vintage Formula 1, Can Am, and international sports cars clearly dance around in his dreams, and after viewing his work, they haunt mine.

The artist says this about himself ?My name is Miha Furlan and I am 28 years old. I come from a small town called Ajdov??ina in Slovenia. I have been drawing cars for as long as I can remember.? ?Uh, how do you pronounce that, again?

He goes on to say ?I am self taught and I mostly work with color pencils, but I also use markers, pastels and ink. My styles vary from realism to semi abstract drawings. Of course I?m available for commissions and I am open minded to whatever subject you might request.? ?Whatever work he does, it is sure to be impressive.

A Memorable Christmas: Visit Famed London Art Exhibitions

London, England, December 22, 2011

Ensure your Christmas is an especially memorable one, and delve into the most eminent exhibitions on display in the cultural capital that is London. As well as exhibitions, there are also a whole host of attractions to explore when you visit the city, from intriguing markets to world famed landmarks, from thrilling interactive experiences to unique events.

There are two art exhibitions that you really should make sure you visit, however: the Pipilotti Rist and the celebrated da Vinci exhibitions.

Make sure you are quick, as the Pipilotti Rist exhibition is only running until 8 January 2012. Prepare for video projections that cascade across diverse surfaces; super-saturated colours that intermix and overrun; and gossamer images that emanate from dark corners. Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist's 30-year retrospective is one of the most overwhelming exhibitions you are likely to experience.

Certainly, one of the most entrancing exhibitions of this autumn is incontestably the da Vinci exhibition at the National Gallery. This has so far proven extremely popular.? Running until 5th?February 2012, advance tickets have in fact already sold out.? Every day, however, a limited number of tickets will be available on the door.? It is worth acting quickly in order to make the most of this mesmerising, distinctive exhibition.

Leonardo da Vinci was, incontrovertibly, a prodigious talent: and, furthermore, the range of his extraordinary skills is almost inconceivable to many.? He made astonishing inputs not merely into painting, but a range of fields ? he was an gifted sculptor, architect, engineer, mathematician, inventor ? and more.

However, he is of course most highly respected and recognised in the current age as a painter, and the National Gallery?s exhibition focuses on this particular facet of his many talents.

Da Vinci was a remarkable polymath. This is really the blockbuster exhibition of the year.? You will well and truly regret not acquiring tickets.? If you do get tickets, you will revel in the experience of a lifetime.

Additionally to this, make your Christmas in London especially memorable when you take Christmas tours. Sightseeing tours make for a truly exceptional experience. You will not just swoop past the most outstanding attractions in the capital arbitrarily. Instead, your guide will bring London enchantingly to life for you in an imaginative and engaging fashion. Become captivated by the often unusual narratives that lie behind the major landmarks of the city.

Visit London this Christmas and immerse yourself in its array of cultural sights and landmarks. Even take a day trip to an enchanting region of the UK ? for example, indulge in a Leeds Castle tour. A visit to the UK truly makes for a Yuletide experience to cherish.

'Forrest Gump' to be preserved in US film registry (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Forrest Gump's oft-imitated line, "My momma always said, `Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get' " will be immortalized among the nation's treasures in the world's largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.

The Library of Congress on Wednesday announced that 1994's smash hit "Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks was one of 25 films chosen to be included this year in the National Film Registry.

The oldest reels are silent films both from 1912. "The Cry of the Children" is about the pre-World War I child labor reform movement and "A Cure for Pokeritis" features the industry's earliest comic superstar John Bunny.

Also from that silent era is Charlie Chaplin's first full-length feature, "The Kid," from 1921.

Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. This year, 2,228 films were nominated.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said in a statement. "Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams."

For each title, the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation works to ensure that the film is preserved for future generations. That comes either by the Library's massive motion-picture preservation program or through collaborating with other archives, motion-picture studios and independent filmmakers.

The most recent film chosen is "Forrest Gump," which won six Academy Awards including for Best Picture.

Also starring in that movie about an everyman who ended up being part of the most iconic events of the 1960s and 1970s was Sally Field. Her perhaps most famous role playing "Norma Rae" in the movie of the same name from 1979 also made the list. She won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a poorly educated single mother who fought successfully to make her Southern textile mill a union shop.

Making the list is the animated Disney classic, "Bambi," made in 1942 about a deer's life in the forest, "The Big Heat" from 1953, a post-war noir film, and 1991's disturbing, "The Silence of the Lambs," which won Oscars for stars Jody Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins plays cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the psychological and violent thriller.

The original "War of the Worlds" from 1953 also will be preserved along with "Porgy and Bess," "Stand and Deliver" and John Ford's epic Western, "The Iron Horse," from 1924.

Lesser known films were chosen for their significance to the art.

"A Computer Animated Hand" from 1972 is by Pixar Animation Studios co-founder Ed Catmull. The one-minute film that is one of the earliest examples of 3D computer animation displays the hand turning, opening and closing, pointing at the viewer and flexing its fingers.

Making the list were notable documentaries as well.

"Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment," focuses on Gov. George Wallace's attempt to prevent two African-American students from enrolling in the University of Alabama and the response of President John F. Kennedy. "Growing Up Female" from 1971 was one of the first films to come from the women's liberation movement.

Also included was "The Negro Soldier," produced by Frank Capra. It showed the heroism of blacks in the nation's wars and became mandatory viewing for all soldiers from spring 1944 until World War II's end.

The Always Up-to-Date Guide to Jailbreaking Your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad [iOS 5.0.1] [Video]

The Always Up-to-Date Guide to Jailbreaking Your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad [iOS 5.0.1]The Always Up-to-Date Guide to Jailbreaking Your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad [iOS 5.0.1] Jailbreaking is a process that changes little by little with each iOS upgrade. Rather than always publishing new guides, we're simply going to keep this one up to date. If you want to jailbreak your iOS device, you've come to the right page.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: This jailbreak is only available for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches that do not have an A5 chip. That means if you own an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S you cannot jailbreak at this time. Please do not attempt to use this jailbreak on your device as it will not work and could cause serious problems. A jailbreak for your device is underway and hopefully we'll see it soon. For now, those of you with older devices are good to go.

Current Untethered Version: iOS 5.0.1
For additional jailbreak options for older versions of iOS, please see the list at the bottom of this page. As this guide is updated, previous versions of the guide will be archived there as well.

Current Tethered Version: iOS 5.0.1
We do not recommend tethered jailbreaking, as it requires you to connect your iDevice to your computer to boot it every time. This is especially bad with new operating system releases, as they tend to freeze up a bit more. You probably don't want your device freezing up and becoming unusable while you're out and about, so you really should wait until an untethered jailbreak is available for iOS 5. That said, if you're jailbreaking for development purposes or carry a laptop with you everywhere, this post will show you can do it.

Not sure if you should jailbreak?
We love jailbreaking our iDevices, but it's not for everybody. If you're not sure, you should read both our reasons not to jailbreak and why jailbreaking is awesome.

The video above will show you how the whole process works, both on your computer and your iOS device. The video depicts the jailbreak process for iOS 4.3.1 but it is identical to the process for iOS 4.3.3 (and 4.3.2, for that matter). Here are the individual steps:

1

Before getting started, make sure you are running iOS 5.0.1, as this jailbreak will only work on iOS 5.0.1 and not 5.0.0. If you're still running 5.0.0, update to 5.0.1. Also, be sure your iDevice does not run on an A5 chip. (This means iPad 2s and iPhone 4S'.) Any earlier device that can run iOS 5.0.1 should work just fine. (This means the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 GSM, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPad 1, iPod touch 3G, and iPod touch 4G.)

2

Download redsn03 0.9.10b1 for Mac OS X or Windows.

3

Turn off your iDevice, connect it to your computer, and open up the redsn0w application.

4

On the redsn0w application window you'll see a Jailbreak button. Click it. You'll be told you'll need to put your iDevice into DFU mode and to click the Next button when ready. When you are ready, go ahead and click it.

5

Hold down the power button at the top of your iDevice for three (3) seconds. Next, continue holding down the power button but also hold down the home button for a total of 10 seconds. Finally, let go of the power button but continue holding down the home button for another 15 seconds, or until redsn0w changes screens and tells you it's exploiting your device for the jailbreak.

6

Once redsn0w has finished doing its business, it'll ask you what you want to do for this jailbreak. By default, only Cydia will be checked. Most of the other options are irrelevant, but you might want to check Enable multitouch gestures if you want additional multitouch gestures on your iPhone or iPod touch.

7

Wait a few minutes for the jailbreak to finish and for your iDevice to reboot. Once it has booted, you'll see the Cydia icon on your home screen (although it may not be on the first page, so look around). Open it up and you'll have access to a bunch of jailbreak hacks.

And you're done! Launch it and you're ready to go. Not sure what to do next? Check out our jailbreaking tag page for some ideas.

Unprovoked attacks at heart of 'Knockout King' (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Matthew Quain still struggles to piece together what happened after a trip to the grocery store nearly turned deadly. He remembers a group of loitering young people, a dimly lit street ? then nothing. The next thing he knew he was waking up with blood pouring out of his head.

The 51-year-old pizza kitchen worker's surreal experience happened just before midnight earlier this year, when he became another victim of what is generally known as "Knockout King" or simply "Knock Out," a so-called game of unprovoked violence that targets random victims.

Scattered reports of the game have come from around the country including Massachusetts, New Jersey and Chicago. In St. Louis, the game has become almost contagious, with tragic consequences. An elderly immigrant from Vietnam died in an attack last spring.

The rules of the game are as simple as they are brutal. A group ? usually young men or even boys as young as 12, and teenage girls in some cases ? chooses a lead attacker, then seeks out a victim. Unlike typical gang violence or other street crime, the goal is not revenge, nor is it robbery. The victim is chosen at random, often a person unlikely to put up a fight. Many of the victims have been elderly. Most were alone.

The attacker charges at the victim and begins punching. If the victim goes down, the group usually scatters. If not, others join in, punching and kicking the person, often until he or she is unconscious or at least badly hurt. Sometimes the attacks are captured on cellphone video that is posted on websites.

"These individuals have absolutely no respect for human life," St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said.

Slay knows firsthand. He was on his way home from a theater around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 when he saw perhaps a dozen young people casually crossing a street. He looked to the curb and saw Quain sprawled on the pavement.

Slay told his driver to pull over. They found Quain unconscious, blood pouring from his head and mouth.

Quain was hospitalized for two days with a broken jaw, a cracked skull and nasal cavity injuries. He still has headaches and memory problems but was finally able to return to work earlier this month. Hundreds gathered in November for a fundraiser at the restaurant where he works, Joanie's Pizza, but he still doesn't know how he'll pay the medical bills.

"I don't remember much of what happened," Quain said. "I was hanging out with a friend, celebrating the Cardinals in the World Series. I went to the store and saw a group of kids who looked out of place, suspicious, but I shrugged it off. I got around to the library, and the next thing I remember is waking up on the corner with the mayor standing next to me. I tried to say `hi' but my jaw was broken."

It isn't clear how long Knockout King has been around, nor is the exact number of attacks known. The FBI doesn't track it separately, but Slay said he has heard from several mayors about similar attacks and criminologists agree versions of the game are going on in many places.

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom said the city has had about 10 Knockout King attacks over the past 15 months.

Experts say it is a grab for attention.

"We know that juveniles don't think out consequences clearly," said Beth Huebner, an associate professor of criminology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "They see something on YouTube and say, `I want to get that sort of attention, too.' They don't think about the person they're attacking maybe hitting their head."

Scott Decker, a criminologist at Arizona State, said the attacks are a modern extension of gang-like behavior ? instead of painting over another gang's graffiti as a show of toughness, they beat someone up and post a video on social media sites. The postings spur copycat crimes.

"It's adolescent and early adults, largely male, showing how tough they are. It's done to show off," Decker said.

Earlier this year in Chicago, a group of teens followed an elderly homeless man at a train station. One of the teens walked up to him and punched him in the face, knocking him out as the teen's friends laughed and mocked the man. The exchange was captured on video and posted on a hip-hop site, where it got about a quarter of a million views within two days. The teen was not arrested because police couldn't locate the homeless man to see if he wanted to press charges.

The crimes aren't limited to big cities. In 2009, Adam Taylor had just entered a parking garage in Columbia, Mo. Surveillance footage from the garage showed a group of teens following him. One of the teens attacked, punching Taylor and sending him crashing into a brick wall. A few seconds later, the others joined in, punching and kicking him as he lay on the ground. Taylor suffered bruising on the brain, whiplash and internal bleeding but survived.

Hoang Nguyen wasn't as fortunate.

The 72-year-old retired schoolteacher immigrated to St. Louis from Vietnam with his wife less than four years earlier to be near their daughter. The couple was returning to their apartment after walking to a grocery store on an April morning in broad daylight.

They took a shortcut through an alley, where they saw a group of young people approaching. Suddenly, one of them charged. Hoang was attacked as he stepped in front of his wife to protect her. The attack went on as he begged for mercy, she told police.

Hoang died of massive injuries. Elex Murphy, 18, was charged with first-degree murder and allegedly told police the attack was part of the Knockout King game. His attorney declined to comment.

St. Louis authorities are going to the source to combat further attacks. A special police squad has been assigned to focus on Knockout King, and a city prosecutor is designated for the attacks. But Isom said equally important is an outreach effort to talk to students.

"Certainly we take this very seriously and we're making every effort to stop it," Isom said.

Bahrain police attack Shiite opposition offices (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Security forces firing rubber bullets and tear gas attacked the headquarters of Bahrain's main Shiite opposition party in the capital on Friday after the group challenged a new government ban on its weekly protests. Police also used tear gas to disperse hundreds of opposition supporters attempting to protest elsewhere in the capital.

"I was really shocked to see tear gas and rubber bullets hit our offices," said vice president of the Al Wefaq party, Sheik Hussain Al Daihi. He said he was inside the building with foreign journalists when the security forces attacked and that a 13-year-old girl among those hurt had a serious injury to her thigh.

Friday's clampdown was the latest episode in 10 months of unrest between Bahrain's Sunni monarchy and an opposition movement led by the country's majority Shiites, who have long complained of discrimination.

"We are a people that won't be broken. All this repression and brutality is the source of our strength and determination to continue the struggle and defend our national rights," Al Daihi said later in a statement.

Authorities banned the weekly Friday protests for the first time since emergency laws were lifted in June. The Interior Ministry "gave silly excuses" to ban the event, including that it would block traffic and endanger others in the area, Al Daihi said.

The Interior Ministry said on its official Twitter account that a group of "vandals" hurled stones at the police forces behind the office of Al Wefaq, prompting it to take "legal procedures."

Defying government orders, Shiite clerics on Friday also held prayer services on the rubble of mosques that had been bulldozed by authorities earlier this year. It was the first time that Shiite clerics have actively taken part in the protest movement, openly defying the government.

The Shiite clerics say at least 38 mosques used by their congregations were destroyed since the protests began in February.

"We will start a campaign to defend our religious sites and the first such activity starts with a protest at the end of the prayer at Diraz grand mosque," senior Shiite cleric Sheik Isa Qassim said during his Friday sermon. Diraz is an opposition stronghold northwest of the capital.

"We demand democracy for one people, Sunni and Shiite, and we understand the approach of the government that aims to divide our people. We are the ones who insist on unity, and because of this we are targeted by the government," he said.

Qassim called on international allies of Bahrain to exert pressure on the government because of what he said was it lack of will to reform.

Bahrain is a key U.S. ally in the Gulf and is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Since February, at least 40 people have been killed.

Hundreds of activists have been detained and brought to trial on anti-state charges in a special security court set up after authorities imposed marital law and invited a Saudi-led Gulf military force into the country to help deal with dissent in the tiny island kingdom.

Bahrain lifted emergency rule in June. Since then, government opponents have clashed with police almost every night.

Multiple sclerosis linked to different area of brain

ScienceDaily (Dec. 22, 2011) ? Radiology researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) have found evidence that multiple sclerosis affects an area of the brain that controls cognitive, sensory and motor functioning apart from the disabling damage caused by the disease's visible lesions.

The thalamus of the brain was selected as the benchmark for the study conducted by faculty at the UTHealth Medical School. Lead researchers include Khader M. Hasan, Ph.D., associate professor, and Ponnada A. Narayana, Ph.D., professor and director of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging; and Jerry S. Wolinsky, M.D., the Bartels Family and Opal C. Rankin Professor in the Department of Neurology.

Results of the research were published in a recent edition of The Journal of Neuroscience.

"The thalamus is a central area that relates to the rest of the brain and acts as the 'post office,' " said Hasan, first author of the paper. "It also is an area that has the least amount of damage from lesions in the brain but we see volume loss, so it appears other brain damage related to the disease is also occurring."

Researchers have known that the thalamus loses volume in size with typical aging, which accelerates after age 70. The UTHealth multidisciplinary team's purpose was to assess if there was more volume loss in patients with multiple sclerosis, which could explain the dementia-related decline associated with the disease.

"Multiple sclerosis patients have cognitive deficits and the thalamus plays an important role in cognitive function. The lesions we can see but there is subclinical activity in multiple sclerosis where you can't see the changes," said senior author Narayana. "There are neurodegenerative changes even when the brain looks normal and we saw this damage early in the disease process."

For the study, researchers used precise imaging by the powerful 3 Tessla MRI scanner to compare the brains of 109 patients with the disease to 255 healthy subjects. The patients were recruited through the Multiple Sclerosis Research Group at UTHealth, directed by Wolinsky, and the healthy controls through the Department of Pediatrics' Children's Learning Institute.

Adjusting for age-related changes in the thalamus, the patients with multiple sclerosis had less thalamic volume than the controls. The amount of thalamic loss also appeared to be related to the severity of disability.

"This is looking at multiple sclerosis in a different way," Hasan said. "The thalami are losing cellular content and we can use this as a marker of what's going on. If we can find a way to detect the disease earlier in a more vulnerable population, we could begin treatment sooner."

The research was funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. The title of the article is "Multimodal Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Thalamic Development and Aging Across the Human Lifespan: Implications to Neurodegeneration in Multiple Sclerosis."

11 Christmas songs we hope never to hear again

By Kristin Kalning

I love Christmas, and I love Christmas music. But not all holiday tunes are created equal. Some songs ? Nat King Cole?s ?O Holy Night,? ?Christmas in Hollis? by Run-D.M.C. ? I can listen to over and over. But others make me want to jam railroad ties into my ears, they?re so awful.

Following is the list of 11 Christmas songs that should never have been made. In some cases, they?re sung by artists that I otherwise respect, which makes these terrible tunes all the more troubling. If there?s a Santa Claus, he will banish these awful, insipid, stupid affronts on Christmas to the Island of Misfit Songs.

11. ?Happy Xmas (War is Over),? John Lennon and Yoko Ono - I?m a die-hard Beatles fan, so it pains me to start this list with a John Lennon song. And it?s actually pretty great ? until the 40-second mark, when Yoko comes in and starts her caterwauling. Honestly, John. I know you loved her and all, but why?d you gotta let her sing?

10. ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,? Neil Diamond ? His first Christmas album was a mega-seller, so for his second one, Neil got a little creative with his arrangements, including a reggae version of ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.? He begins this song by calling out to the boys and girls in a Jamaican accent. I?m embarrassed for him.

9. ?Santa Baby,? Madonna ? I?ll bet the modern-day Madonna listens to this 1987 version of herself and cringes. I know I do. Perhaps she thought her nasal-voiced, cutsey-pie delivery was sexy, but really, she sounds like a half-in-the-bag bimbo. For sexy, see Kitt, Eartha, or Minogue, Kylie.

8. ?Last Christmas,? Wham ? This song is like cilantro: You either love it, or you think it tastes like soap. I?m in the latter camp. Vapid lyrics and cheesy music make "Last Christmas" completely unlistenable. Worse yet, those damned ?Glee? kids went and covered it, so all the teenyboppers are into it now. Gaaaah.

?7. ?Do They Know It?s Christmas?? Band Aid ? When I was a youngster, I thought this song was awesome, because it had Sting and Bono and Duran Duran (swoon). And it was made to help those affected by the Ethiopian famine of the mid-1980s. But the lyrics appear to be written by a third-grader (?There won?t be snow in Africa this Christmas time), or a pompous first-world jackass (?Well tonight, thank God it's them instead of yooooouuuu!?)?

6. ?Silver and Gold,? Burl Ives ? This song has the power to bring down a room. I know because I?ve seen it happen, during my son?s inaugural viewing of ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.? Here they?ve just introduced Yukon Cornelius, and then, bam! Preschoolers all take a powder while the snowman guy sings ?Silver and Gold.? Buzz kill!

5. ?Zat You, Santa Claus?? Buster Poindexter ? Look, I don?t like the Louis Armstrong version of this song, either. But the Buster Poindexter rendition is nails-on-a-chalkboard bad. It?s change-the-station bad. It?s pull-the-car-over-and-smoke-a-cigarette bad. Bad, bad, bad.

4. ?Christmas Don't Be Late,? Alvin and the Chipmunks ? When you?re 5 years old, this song is hilarious. When you?re an adult, this song is torture. Let?s say you were a spy, and you were captured. How many times do you think you could endure this record before you broke down? Think about it. And then, answer me this: Why is a grown man living with three chipmunks? 3. ?Baby It?s Cold Outside,? Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone ?The lyrics of this song make me mildly uncomfortable to begin with. This woman is trying to leave, for God?s sake, but her ?date? won?t let her. I don?t mind so much when it?s Dean Martin. But Zooey Deschanel sounds so drowsy when she sings, ?Say, what?s in this drink?? that I really want to call 911. 2. ?Wonderful Christmastime,? Paul McCartney ? For an artist with his pedigree, this song is unforgivable. It?s an overproduced, strangled-by-synthesizer mess that deserves the distinction as one of the worst Christmas songs ever. Insult to injury: Sir McCartney, already richer than God, makes almost half a million bucks a year off this song, it gets played so much.1. ?O Holy Night,? Christina Aguilera ? Let me first say that this is my very favorite Christmas hymn, and it offends me when celebrities mangle it. Aguilera?s taste level, always in question, is particularly egregious here. I don?t deny that she?s got serious pipes, but this song deserves reverence, not show-offy vocal gymnastics. Christina: Must you recite the Lord?s Prayer midway through? And why, WHY extend this train wreck with a Broadway-meets-gospel-choir ending? The worst. Period.

Senate approves two-month extension of payroll tax cut (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Senate on Friday approved a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut that otherwise is set to expire on December 31, clearing the way for a vote in the House of Representatives that could occur shortly.

If the economy-boosting measure passes the House, as expected, it would clear the way for congressional negotiations on follow-up legislation to extend the tax cut through 2012 for 160 million American workers.

Justin Timberlake: Engaged to Jessica Biel?

Justin Timberlake is engaged to Jessica Biel after popping the question at a luxury resort in Wyoming on Monday, according to secret sources ... allegedly.

The pair are staying at five star skiing resort in Jackson called the Amangani, and - if local intel is to be believed - that's where he got down on one knee.

Supposedly. Here's where the Timberlake-Biel engagement rumor originated:

Justin Timberlake WavesJessica Biel Smiles

An art gallery owner in the Jackson apparently heard the news (Justin and the New Year's Eve star are literally the talk of the town) and Tweeted: "Word on the street is that Justin Timberlake proposed to Jessica Biel at the Amangani last night."

Not exactly hard proof, but the usual denials haven't poured in, either.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel were together for years before hitting a rough patch at the beginning of 2011. After a few months apart, they reconciled.

Recently, the pair then were spotted spending time together in New York a few times in August, and by September things seemed to be fully back together.

Maybe the break was exactly what they needed. If the engagement is real, it's great news and we can't wait to get the official confirmation from them.

If it's just a rumor ... a celebrity gossip site can dream still.

New Report Breaks Down Post Tornado Spending in Joplin

Reported by: Gretchen Bolander

Joplin, MO- "Construction and home improvement is up about 42% and motor vehicles is up about 38%. So that pretty well helps us determine that a lot of this is replacing the lost items from the tornado." That, according to City of Joplin Finance Director Leslie Jones. A new report shows the City of Joplin collected nearly $2.8 million on construction and home improvement alone in Fiscal Year 2011. Add in car sales - that another $2.2 million.

Jones added, "Furniture stores are up 21% - people replacing their furniture." There's a category for discount stores - an increase for more than 10%. And malls - up 5% in 2011 compared to 2010. "Restaurants up 10% visitors here. Every one of these you can absolutely tie to the tornado, whether it's visitors being here or people rebuilding and replacing items."

But there are some exceptions to the increase. Entertainment outlets saw a slight drop. Grocery stores are down nearly 10 percent... and the development district at 17th and Range Line saw a 34% decrease. Said, Jones, "1717 obviously was gone for several months of 2011. So that explains why that was down. And grocery stores, we obviously lost a grocery store in the tornado."

Overall, it adds up to an extra $2 million in sales tax revenue for the City of Joplin. Compare that to 2010, when the city saw a 2.9% decrease, along with the fact the city has much bigger bills to pay after the tornado.

Coulson loses case against News Corp; Mulcaire wins (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Andy Coulson, former editor of Rupert Murdoch's News of the World and once the British prime minister's spokesman, lost a case on Wednesday to force the tabloid's publisher to pay his legal fees relating to phone-hacking charges.

Coulson was arrested in July on suspicion of corruption and trying to intercept communications, and could face charges early next year. He was editor of the now defunct News of the World between 2003 and 2007.

News Corp unit News Group Newspapers, the publisher of the News of the World, stopped paying his legal costs relating to criminal proceedings in August, on the grounds that they were not incurred in the scope of his duties.

News Corp has admitted people working for the News of the World hacked into the phones of celebrities, politicians and others. It paid 2 million pounds ($3 million) to the parents of a murdered schoolgirl whose phone was hacked.

The ever-widening scandal has damaged the reputations of politicians and senior police officers close to Murdoch's media group.

Coulson quit as Prime Minister David Cameron's communications chief in January after Cameron was criticized for his decision to hire him.

Earlier on Wednesday, News Group lost a similar case against Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator used by the News of the World to hack phones, and will have to resume paying his fees as he defends himself against scores of civil claims.

Mulcaire went to jail in 2007 for illegally listening to telephone voice messages, along with Clive Goodman, the former royal reporter at the News of the World.

News Corp Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch and his son James told a British parliamentary committee in July they would stop paying Mulcaire's legal fees, which run at least into the hundreds of thousands of pounds (dollars).

Until early this year News Corp said Goodman had been a "rogue reporter" acting with Mulcaire's help. The company has since acknowledged that the practice of hacking went much wider at the News of the World, and shut the paper down.

A statement released on behalf of Mulcaire by his lawyer said: "As he always said, he was acting on the instruction of News Group Newspapers and he clearly needs legal representation to deal with the numerous cases."

News Group's parent company News International confirmed both rulings but declined to comment on either.
