Finding a SAT Tutoring Specialist to Help You to Prepare

Having a strong SAT score is one of the most important criteria that you will need to get into the college of your choice. Every year there are thousands of students across the country busy preparing to take their SAT?s. Formerly known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test or the Scholastic Assessment Test, this test measures an individual?s aptitude in critical reading and writing, as well as mathematics. Most colleges and universities require it of all of their applicants. For those who are panicking about taking the test there is SAT tutoring to give them the peace of mind that they will be prepared when the day to take the examination rolls around.

With the right level of preparation and the assistance of a good tutor who knows his or her stuff, you can acquire the skills that you need to not only pass the test but to excel on it! SAT tutoring may not be necessary for every student but if you feel that you could benefit from the extra help then it is a very good idea to find a qualified tutor to help you to learn and to brush up on the areas that you anticipate will present a problem for you when you sit down to write.

How do you find a SAT tutoring expert?

What you first need to do is to research your options. There are big companies that offer SAT tutoring and there are also those who work as independent tutors. For instance, many high school teachers and college students choose to freelance or work part-time to supplement their incomes. Check out the various options available to you and then decide if you would rather hire someone from one of the larger firms who specializes in this area or if you would rather work with an individual.

You need to interview and consult with each person that you are thinking about hiring to help you to prepare for your exam. Ask the person about his credentials. You not only want to choose someone who is smart and successful in an academic sense but also someone who is excellent at taking tests. Most companies who hire individuals for this job will not accept anyone for employment who scored below the 90th percentile on their SAT. There is nothing wrong with expecting the same high standards from an independent contractor.

It is wise to schedule a preliminary appointment to discuss what your specific needs are for the SAT tutoring. Some individuals may need help in one or two particular sections while other students may wish to improve their test taking skills in general. Only you can know for sure which category you fall into.

Before you move forward you must discuss price. Find out about the fees per session as well as if the person charges cancellation fees for missed appointments. Some will charge a fee if you cancel without giving 24 hours notice while others will not.

Bill Murray mulls Oscar prospects as Roosevelt

(AP) ? Most stars shun the "O word" ? Oscar ? when they might be in the running for an Academy Award, not wanting to jinx their chances or look too eager.

Bill Murray has no problem dissecting Hollywood's highest honors.

A best actor nominee for 2003's "Lost in Translation," Murray could have Oscar prospects again as Franklin Delano Roosevelt in "Hyde Park on the Hudson," a comic drama that played the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival.

Murray won a string of key prizes for "Lost in Translation" leading up to the Oscars, including a Golden Globe, an Independent Spirit Award and honors from many critics groups.

When he lost on Oscar night, it was a lesson not to get your hopes up too high, Murray said in an interview.

"You can't get all ramped up and amped up about this thing all the time," Murray said. "I mean, I got excited about it once, and it was odd. I won all the prizes, I won literally all the prizes all the way up to the last one. And I really thought, well, 'I've just to go get this thing, I'll be right back.'

"And then I didn't win, and I thought, 'Well, that's odd. How odd is that? I'm feeling so odd now.' And I came all dressed up and didn't win. So I'm not going to get all crazy about that."

Murray is a rare comic actor who has evolved into a performer with the depth to create characters that put him into the awards mix with such films as "Rushmore," ''Get Low" and "Broken Flowers."

The former "Saturday Night Live" regular and crazy man of "Ghostbusters," ''Caddyshack" and "Stripes" first dabbled in heavy drama with a 1984 adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's "The Razor's Edge." Audiences and critics were not kind.

The reaction toughened him up for the inevitable double-takes as people mull the notion: Bill Murray as Franklin Roosevelt?

After "The Razor's Edge," ''I remember a certain famous movie reviewer saying, 'Bill Murray should not be allowed to do anything but comedy,' which I reminded him of at the Cannes Film Festival when I was nominated for an Oscar," Murray said. "Sometimes when you've got a biopic and they go, 'Jerry Lewis will play Albert Einstein' or something, the first thing is, 'No, don't buy it. Not for a second.'"

Murray knows people may have trouble buying him as Roosevelt. But he approached the character with the same thoughts he had when he played writer Hunter S. Thompson in 1980's "Where the Buffalo Roam."

The actor already was friends with Thompson, and when it came time to capture the writer on film, Murray aimed to bring out the writer's brightest qualities.

"I had the feeling of, like, 'I've got to revere the best of this person,'" Murray said. "The same with Roosevelt. I had to revere the best of him."

Murray is a very credible Roosevelt, capturing the grace, humor, subtle tact and homey wisdom of the president as he plays host to the king and queen of Britain, who have come over to seek American support as World War II approaches.

Directed by Roger Michell ("Notting Hill"), "Hyde Park on the Hudson" is told largely through the eyes of Roosevelt's spinster cousin (Laura Linney), a confidant of the president. The film opens in U.S. theaters in December.

Murray's sister had polio, the disease that crippled Roosevelt, so the actor said he had a strong sense of how to play the president's body language as he struggles on crutches, is pushed about in a wheelchair or is curled like a child in the arms of aides who lift him in and out of cars.

Capturing Roosevelt's voice was the bigger challenge. Murray worked with a voice coach to break down the unusual mix of vowel sounds in Roosevelt's speech.

"It's upstate New York, it's a little bit of Dutch in it, because he's Dutch. It almost sounds Scandinavian. They've got kind of an 'oot' and 'aboot' thing, like Minnesota, Wisconsin, in there sometime," Murray said. "It's just an inconsistent voice. It jumps around a little bit, so you had to be kind of flexible with it. I just tried to get as much of it in me as I could."

The intimate film shows Roosevelt in private life, so Murray wasn't called on for any grand oratory.

Though he was ready for some public speaking of his own at the Oscars for "Lost in Translation," Murray has a practical attitude about the value of his awards prospects this time: If he's got Oscar buzz, it will draw audience attention to the film.

"It was OK that I didn't win, and I don't have any hard feelings about it. It was like, 'OK, that was cool, I'm fine. I'm fine with the way my career's gone. I'm happy with it. It's gone great.'

"The great thing about the Oscars that's cool is it means people are going to see your movie. That's really the deal."

After a few days of hard partying and rich eating I was ready for some macro goodness. Which is a shame because RFD do some amazing rich meals too.

I got the real food bargain which is their signature bowl but served with cornbread and miso soup. As you can see this meal was friggin MASSIVE, but interestingly this has been the only meal I've taken the leftovers home with me. I think portion sizes are becoming a lot more sane since in the 2 years since I've been to the USA. I also had an ulterior motive for taking most of my meal home with me, DESSERT. This was the first dessert I had since getting to the states and boy was it a doozy. I couldn't finish it and sadly Karim had to go back to work so half of it was wasted but it was totally delicious.

I rarely talk about drinks as I usually forget but I had the tropical smoothie which consisted of mango, pineapple, banana and coconut water (6.95), AMAZE and totally what I needed in the heat of LA and dehydration of lots of drinking in the sun.

I think we all know how much I revere RFD and Anne Gentry. It's usually the first stop when I get to LA and literally will be soon as Anne is opening a restaurant at LAX in December. It's not cheap (did I also mention its all organic) but is totally worth it. ?

Led Zeppelin to release reunion concert film

LONDON (Reuters) - British rockers Led Zeppelin will release a concert film based on their 2007 charity performance in London that hits cinemas on October 17, the band said on Thursday.

The film, called "Celebration Day" and directed by Dick Carruthers, was taken from the long-awaited reunion of one of rock's most successful acts.

The theatrical release will be across 1,500 screens in more than 40 territories, followed by an audio and video release on November 19.

There will be premieres in London, Los Angeles, New York and other major cities before the theatrical release, raising the possibility of seeing the three surviving band members on the same red carpet, if not the same stage.

The band broke up in 1980 after the death of their drummer John Bonham, but despite repeated calls from millions of fans to get back together to tour and record, reunions have been fleeting and, by their own admission, unsatisfactory.

But in 2007, singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bass player John Paul Jones, along with Bonham's son and drummer Jason, took the stage at London's O2 Arena for a tribute gig to Atlantic Records' founder Ahmet Ertegun.

It was the first headline show by the band in 27 years, and according to Cineworld, the cinema chain which will screen the movie in Britain, it was the most over-subscribed gig in history after more than 20 million people applied for 18,000 tickets.

"It's a unique opportunity to savor what is likely to be Led Zeppelin's final performance," Cineworld said.

The band, one of rock's biggest acts with global album sales estimated at up to 300 million, played 16 songs on the night including hits like "Whole Lotta Love", "Kashmir" and "Stairway to Heaven".

The poster promoting the film features a cartoon of a zeppelin airship against a red sky above London's Houses of Parliament, reminiscent of the artwork on the band's 2007 compilation album "Mothership".

Following is the track listing of the upcoming film, which will last just over two hours.

1. Good Times Bad Times

2. Ramble On

3. Black Dog

4. In My Time Of Dying

5. For Your Life

6. Trampled Under Foot

7. Nobody's Fault But Mine

8. No Quarter

9. Since I've Been Loving You

10. Dazed And Confused

11. Stairway To Heaven

12. The Song Remains The Same

13. Misty Mountain Hop

14. Kashmir

15. Whole Lotta Love

16. Rock And Roll.

Steve Case Talks American Competitiveness And Finding The Next Wave

steve caseDetroit might seem like an odd place to hold a tech conference, but when Steve Case, CEO of Revolution and founder of AOL (TechCrunch's parent company), took the stage this morning at Techonomy Detroit, he said the event was not just a good idea but a great one. For one thing, Case said it's part of the "awesome story of Detroit fighting its way back and not giving up." More broadly, there's a trend that he calls "the rise of the rest" ? the emergence of cities around the country that are trying to become "entrepreneurial hotbeds."

Get Rid Of Acne With Some Healthy Skin Tips | Miss O Moms

Written by William Burnell

I happened to be standing in a line behind a well-known sports woman. I found it hard not to stare at her because she looked so good. She was the picture of health. She radiated good health and fitness ? her skin was glowing, her hair and eyes were shining. To look that good on the outside she had to be healthy on the inside.

She was often seen in the media promoting a range of health foods and a healthy lifestyle. Looking at her, you had to say she practiced what she preached. Her health started from the inside. I think if I had asked her for healthy skin tips she would have told me to make sure I had a healthy body.

Eliminate White Sugar From Your Diet

If health starts from the inside then where do we start? We start by eliminating products that do not add to our good health, which means they are probably having a negative effect. Foods that have absolutely no nutritional value at all: white sugar and food heavily laden with sugar.

This means many popular breakfast cereals, many of which have up to 30 percent sugar in them. Their manufacturers claim they are healthy because vitamins have been added but in most cases the negative effect of the sugar far outweighs any positive effects of the vitamins. I know they should be good for you because they are made of grain, but all the goodness has been lost in their processing.

Eliminate White Flour From Your Diet

Another food that has lost its nutritional value is white flour and the products made from it. This means white bread, cakes and cookies. These products have a double barrel effect ? too much no-nutritional sugar and low nutritional white flour. They are not only not improving our health but they are actually having a negativeeffect. They are harming our bodies.

Why won?t this food help us get rid of acne? This food breaks down into sugar quickly and easily, raising our blood sugar. The body deals with this surge of sugar by producing insulin, which is a hormone. This causes a hormone imbalance in the body and, if you are prone to acne, an acne breakout can occur.

If you have made a habit of eating this type of food, then your body is responding in the same way over and over again. So you are getting acne breakouts continually. If you give up these two foods will it cure you acne? Possibly not, but it is a good start and it should lessen the breakouts. Then you can move onto other parts of your diet by including dark green leafy vegetables to act as anti-oxidants to get rid of the toxins and other vegetables and fruit to gain nutrition.

Google Wallet to phase out prepaid card, cut-off date set for October 17th

Google Wallet to phase out prepaid card, cutoff date set for October 17th

Google Wallet's prepaid card concept has been plagued with its share of security concerns, and though Mountain View seems to have sorted out those issues, it's now phasing out the prepaid card program entirely. The service was intended to make up for a limited choice in debit and credit cards, and now that Google Wallet accepts any and all plastic, the prepaid option is a bit moot. The cut-off date for adding funds to a Google prepaid card is September 17th, and the prepaid option will vanish entirely on October 17th. Whereas users were previously charged $2.00 per month after 180 days without a transaction, they'll get slapped with the same fee after 30 days of no purchases. Google says you can request a refund if you have a remaining balance after the prepaid option kicks the bucket, though it's probably a good idea to just go ahead and spend those leftover dollars.

[Thanks, Chris]

YouTube releases standalone app for iOS, tablettailored version in the works

There was much (some?) tearing of clothes and gnashing of teeth when Apple pulled its YouTube app from iOS 6. That pain was lessened by Google's promise of a standalone app to replace it, and now Big G's version has arrived, ready to be installed on the legions of new iPhones to come. YouTube's touting the app's fresh channel guide -- that lets users swipe from left to right to reveal a screen with easy access to their channel subscriptions -- and better search features as the main attractions of the new software. Oh, and for folks with ten-inch Apple screens, YouTube has assured us that its engineers are back in the lab cooking up an iPad-specific version set to show up "in the coming months." Until then, the phone version will have to suffice, and you can grab it at the iTunes source link below once it's available.

Peace, Power, Love. | The Texas Tribune: For Texas Schools ...

School districts can get rich just as fast as the people in the oil business, and the poor-to-rich whiplash can have some weird aftereffects.

Public schools in Texas get about half of their money, on average, from property taxes. And when the property turns out to be sitting on top of the Eagle Ford Shale play, the sudden changes in wealth can produce fiscal temblors in the schools.

Some, like the Dilley Independent School District, see an influx of money and get to keep it. Others, like the Cotulla I.S.D., see the money come in but don?t get to keep it for very long.

Dilley, southwest of San Antonio on Interstate 35, has seen property values balloon to about $275 million from $130 million two years ago, according to Nobert Rodriguez, the superintendent. It is by most measures a poor school district ? one that gets money from the state to supplement what can be raised from local property taxes.

The general idea (school finance is about as simple as the tax code) is that no district should have too high a tax rate and that the state will supplement those that can?t raise enough locally to pay for schools. The rich districts that can, with the same tax rate, raise more than a certain amount for public schools have to use some of their money to support the poor districts. That?s called ?recapture,? in the gnarled language of school finance.

The boom in property values means more money for Dilley, where 78 percent of the students qualify for free and reduced school meals, a benefit that is based on family income. And as fast as its fortunes have risen, Dilley is still in a position to raise money locally and to get money from the state. Property values will have to increase by another $140 million or so before the state comes asking for money. It?s not impossible, Mr. Rodriguez said. ?Last year,? he said, ?we went up $100 million.?

Cotulla, off the next major exit ramp from I-35 as you go south, is in a more difficult situation. Values there have jumped to $2.3 billion from $877 million, according to the school superintendent, Jack Seals. The district will bring in more money this year and won?t have to write the state a big check ? there?s a one-year lag before the new local values are plugged into the state?s formula. Next year, however, Mr. Seals estimates, Cotulla will be writing the state a $15 million check.

It doesn?t mean that the district is rich or the people in it are wealthy ? just that the land it taxes has gone up quickly and dramatically in value. In Cotulla, 85 percent of the students were from economically disadvantaged families in 2010.

But more money in revenue can mean more money for the schools, as is the case in Dilley. In Cotulla, it?s an issue for the accountants, who will need to set aside enough of this year?s windfall to help cover next year?s check to the state. Theoretically, they?ll have about the same amount of money to spend per student each year.

But booms make the schools nervous. Right now, construction is at a crazy pace, and there are big trucks on all the roads. Out-of-town workers outnumber rooms and beds and have to sleep in trailers, new hotels, portable buildings or the backs of their trucks.

It?s a classic boom. People are getting rich and working hard, and the dirt is flying.

Since 2010, more than a dozen school districts ? mostly small ones like North Zulch, Carrizo Springs and Karnes City ? have seen property values rise rapidly, with more than half the growth coming from mineral properties, according to an analysis by Moak, Casey & Associates, a consultancy in Austin.

If the boom stops, property values will drop. If oil and gas prices fall ? even if the production and construction continue ? property values will fall. In the Dilleys and Cotullas, that would mean less money. Dilley gets to keep its windfall now without sending it to the state, but would not see it replaced should values drop.

Cotulla would be able to get state money again. But remember that one-year lag that?s working for them now? It would work against them in a year of declining values.

?I worry about declining values in the future,? Mr. Seals said. ?If values drop, we?re going to be well behind the eight ball.?

7 scientists win prestigious Lasker medical awards

NEW YORK (AP) ? Seven scientists have won prestigious medical awards for development of liver transplantation, discoveries about the inner workings of cells, and leadership in biomedical science.

The Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation announced the winners Monday. The prizes, worth $250,000 for each of three categories, will be presented in New York on Sept. 21.

The Lasker award for clinical medical research was shared by Dr. Thomas Starzl of the University of Pittsburgh and Dr. Roy Calne, an emeritus professor at Cambridge University, for developing liver transplantation.

Their work on the surgical procedure and treatment to prevent organ rejection was done initially in dogs. In 1960, Calne's dog experiments demonstrated for the first time that a drug could fend off organ rejection. Starzl attempted the first human liver transplant in 1963. That patient died during the procedure. The next several patients died within weeks of their surgeries, but they showed that transplanted livers could function.

Both men pursued further research, especially in blocking rejection. Liver transplantation finally gained acceptance in the 1980s, and it has "restored normal life to thousands of patients," the foundation said.

The award for basic medical research was shared by Michael Sheetz of Columbia University, James Spudich of Stanford University, and Ronald Vale of the University of California, San Francisco. They were honored for discoveries about the biological machines that make muscles contract and transport cargos within cells. Pressman iPieces Snakes & Ladders

By Will Greenwald

The iPad?{{/ziffcse} has led to several advances in making games more interactive, thanks to its large touch screen and portability. It's basically a 10-inch game board you can touch and manipulate in real time, so it's perfect for board games. Pressman tries to capitalize on this with its iPieces games, among which include the classic Snakes & Ladders game. This $12.99 (direct) game includes game pieces and ladders to place on the iPad screen while you play the free Snakes & Ladders app [downloadable from the iTunes App Store]. It's a nice idea, but the implementation is completely disappointing.

The box contains four game pieces, each a different color, and two plastic "ladders." The game pieces and ladders both have felt pads on the bottom that activate the iPad's capacitive touch screen and make the free app respond. You put the pieces on the game board in the app, place ladders when the rules allow you, and that's it. It's no different than playing a conventional board game with conventional pieces, except they have pads at the bottom to work with the iPad.

The app consists of a virtual board, a virtual die, and that's it. Everything is done manually, from moving the pieces to "placing" the ladders (which can only be used on certain tiles). When you place a piece on a tile, a white star appears to show you it has been placed. That star means nothing, and the star will appear if you tap any tile, regardless of how the roll went. You can even tap the last tile and get the winning screen without rolling the die or moving a piece. It makes no effort to tie the pieces and the interactivity of the iPad together into a game that enhances the board game itself. You could just as easily play with your fingers, or coins, or any other small object on the app, or use the pieces on a piece of paper with a grid drawn on it. The two disparate elements of the game, the physical pieces and the virtual board, don't interact with each other in any real way, making the game feel shallow and pointless.

Snakes & Ladders highlights how some games become redundant with technology upgrades if they don't innovate the game during the upgrade. It's a nice concept to use an iPad as a virtual board for a board game, but without adding any features that utilize the touch screen, you're playing the same game you'd be playing if you had a sketchpad or a piece of cardboard and drew squares and snakes on it.

Aweigh uphill minus any supports | Emil's Blog

If you have ever been natural object rise beforehand next you will know that it is not a exceptionally soft sport, in information you in all probability cloth rather unsuccessful once you preliminary well-tried to do any serious rising. Indoor and exterior rock climb are both superlatively demanding and demand practice, like thing else, to get keen at. Depending on what field of hiking you have well-tried you utmost apt noticed that you got an undreamed of effort in a severely stout spell of instance. What best populace don't know is that the recreation of bang ascension is one of the most physically and spiritually strict sports in attendance is.

There are 3 uncomplicated types of stone rising. Top labour is likely one of the utmost prevailing types and is roughly climbing beside a relation. The significant other belays you on the base and a line runs from his support up to the top of the wall later nigh on a machine and posterior thrown and attaches to the climbers harness. The 2nd type, which is totally equivalent to top labour is titled metal mounting. The friend set-up complex the same way, one man on the flooring belaying and the another climbing, but this incident as an alternative of the line individual at the top of the divider it has to be curved into clasps as the climber ascends up the wall. In both of these types of stone climb the climber has the extravagance to sit off the partition and nap on the rope, however, metal ascension requires the vine to hang down from the divider from one hand, seize the rope, and jerk it up to cut it into the clasps, this can be deeply complex depending on oodles opposite property.

The tertiary genus of natural object ice climbing is titled bouldering. Bouldering is a species of aweigh uphill minus any supports or harnesses. The vine tends to stay put noticeably closer to the earth and climbs about the divider more than so afterwards up the divider. This is the furthermost rigorous of all hiking. The vine must be competent to completed the line without taking a remains on the rope. Often, during a bouldering highway the vine is needful to do a simulated military operation titled a dyno. Dynos are fundamentally launching yourself off the wall, and after grabbing onto a prehension additional distant from you. Will 2012 see more strong men of Africa leave office?

There are many reasons for being angry with Africa ?s strong men, whose autocratic ways have thrust some African countries back into the eye of the storm and threatened to undo the democratic gains in other parts of the continent of the past decades.? Blog?

Operation Somalia: The U.S., Ethiopia and now Kenya

Travel insurance myths debunked

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??Most people who do not travel frequently usually have very little idea about the nooks and crannies of travel insurance. Here are some common myths and misconceptions about travel insurance that need to be clarified.

travel insurance myth

1.It?s easy to claim for cancellation or interruption cover

Most people who purchase travel insurance especially request to be reimbursed in case they have to cancel their trip. The ugly truth is, it is not easy at all to make this claim. Travel insurance companies are very strict in their investigation into cancellation cases, because this is the area where people can most easily try to trick the companies. Be prepared to substantiate your claim with concrete evidence of the inevitability of your cancellation!

2.Airlines will reimburse you for delays

Most airlines will not, unfortunately. Thus, you do need to dig your pocket for extra cover in your travel insurance scheme if you want to be compensated in times of prolonged delay!

3.Don?t buy travel insurance through travel agent

While it is true that purchasing travel insurance online will be cheaper, there is no harm in purchasing one through a reliable travel agent who charge reasonable commission price. A good travel agent has experience with insurance companies and can advise on product reliability.

4.Only unshophisticated travelers buy travel insurance

Many frequent travelers cannot even be bothered to purchase travel insurance because they have never faced any misfortune throughout their travelling life. However research reveals that those who buy travel insurance tend to be better educated, take longer and more expensive trips, usually the hallmarks of sophisticated travelers. Buying travel insurance is always a wise option only the more knowledgeable travelers know to do!

August Jobs Watched as Election Indicator

Traders are watching the August jobs report Friday as an election indicator, as much as for an economic indicator.

Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images

Economists expect to see 125,000 nonfarm payrolls were added in August, and an unemployment rate stuck stubbornly at 8.3 percent, according to Reuters data.

That compares to 163,000 jobs that were added in July, but on Thursday market talk was that the August number could be 140,000 to 150,000 or better, based on a strong ADP private payroll report showing 201,000 jobs added in August, and surprising job strength in the ISM nonmanufacturing survey.

The jobs number is viewed as the latest grade on President Barack Obama?s economic report card, and also as a trigger for possible Fed action.

?This is really about whether the trajectory of the economy is going to take (Obama) over the top or not,? said Dan Clifton, head of policy research at Strategas.

The Fed meets next Wednesday and Thursday, and the jobs report is the last big piece of economic news officials will consider. While some economists expect to see the Fed embark on another quantitative easing (QE) program, they mostly expect it later in the year. But those odds change if the 8:30 a.m. ET jobs number is very weak.

?I think we might be in a situation where if the number is really good, it?s not going to get much of a reaction,? said Barry Knapp, head of U.S. equity portfolio strategy at Barclays. ?If we were going to get something that looks like the ADP report then that lowers the probability of additional Fed stimulus, and it lowers the probability of getting an election outcome the market will like.?

Republican Mitt Romney is Wall Street?s preferred presidential candidate. ?You could almost see if it?s a bad number, that could be perceived as good for the market, because that would help Romney,? said Steve Massocca of Wedbush Securities.

Massocca and others see a Romney victory, or a Republican win of the Senate as a path to easier resolution of the so-called fiscal cliff at the end of the year. The fiscal cliff is the dual expiration of Bush era tax cuts combined with the automatic spending cuts that would hit the economy starting Jan. 1 if Congress does not act.

?I think part of this rally is the feeling that Republicans are going to do very well in November,? said Massocca. The S&P 500 soared 28 points to 1432, and the Dow jumped 244 points Thursday to 13,292 after the European Central Bank announced a bond buying program aimed at driving down borrowing costs for cash-strapped countries. The Dow is at its highest level since December, 2007, and at the highest level it?s been at since Obama took the White House.

?If you?re a middle-of-the-road voter whose major concern is the economy than these data points are going to matter,? Massocca said. ?And given the fact you?re going to have some sort of fiscal policy shift, then whose hands are on the tiller when that happens is going to matter.?

As for the jobs report, Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody?s Economy.com, expect to see 150,000 jobs added, the underlying rate of job growth? year-to-date. He does not expect to see the Fed move before the election.

?I don?t think they want to move until after the election, when the economy really truly is going to weaken because of the fiscal issues. Each time they do QE, it?s really less potent,? he said.

Zandi expects to see the unemployment rate stay at 8.3 percent. ?I think we?re creating enough jobs that at the moment, unemployment stabilizes or even moves down a notch by the election,? he said.

Strategas? Clifton said the election has come to a period of ?shock and awe,? with a number of major events that could swing sentiment. Those include President Bill Clinton?s speech Wednesday night where he asked voters to be patient, saying no president could have done better to fix the economy.?? He said other major factors are the ECB action, the jobs report and next week?s Fed meeting.

?You?ve got Obama?s speech (Thursday night) and they?re hoping for a bounce,? he said. President Obama is always briefed on the jobs report the evening before it is released so traders were watching that speech for clues.

Clifton said the jobs number is important but not because of the way voters react to it.

?That?s not what happens. Voters are going to vote how they really feel. When that number comes across the tape, that number is going to reflect how they really feel.? Clifton said the jobs number is a lagging indicator, already reflecting what the public has experienced. He did say the unemployment rate is very much correlated to the president?s approval rating.

?The driver really is the president?s approval rating. The president?s approval rating is 45 percent. He needs 50 percent. The only thing that can take him from 45 to 50 is a stronger trajectory of growth in the economy?people need to be getting jobs. Their income needs to keep growing.?

Clifton said his research shows there is a strong correlation between growth in payrolls and presidential reelections. ?The president needs 1.1 percent growth in nonfarm payrolls from January through September to get to 50 percent,? he said. ?They?ve increased about 0.8 percent?basically he needs 400,000 jobs between this month and next month and then he?ll be at 50 percent.?

?No president has won reelection with an approval rating below 50 percent before the election,? he said, pointing to data going back to the Johnson Administration.

He also said Obama needs consumer sentiment to improve. While at a three-month high, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey is at 73.6. ?It?s been over 90 for every other president that has won. We think the president needs to get that number to 83,? Clifton said. Consumer sentiment was in the low 70s in 1980, when Ronald Reagan won and in 1992 when Clinton won.

?This is basically in Obama?s hands at this point, and it?s really in the economy?s hands,? Clifton said.

Knapp said the August jobs report is the last big one in terms of influencing the debate.

?A strong number will hurt Romney, but not as much as a weak number will hurt Obama,? he said.

?People are skeptical but they do want to buy into the longer term bullish story on the U.S. around manufacturing, and our energy position,? Knapp said. ? I think people want to be optimistic?I think the market?s collective mind is ?we?re going to get to the right place.? There?s certainly no reason for the market to be rallying this strongly based on core fundamentals.?

Weapon-wielding marine microbes may protect populations from foes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 6, 2012) ? Competition is a strong driving force of evolution for organisms of all sizes: Those individuals best equipped to obtain resources adapt and reproduce, while others may fall by the wayside. Many organisms -- mammals, birds and insects, for instance -- also form cooperative social structures that allow resources to be defended and shared within a population.

But surprisingly, even microbes, which are thought to thrive only when able to win the battle for resources against those nearest to them, have a somewhat sophisticated social structure that relies on cooperation, according to MIT scientists. These researchers have recently found evidence that some ocean microbes wield chemical weapons that are harmless to close relatives within their own population, but deadly to outsiders.

The weapons are natural antibiotics produced by a few individuals whose closest relatives carry genes that make them resistant. The researchers believe that the few antibiotic producers are acting as protectors of the many, using the antibiotics to defend the population from competitors or to attack neighboring populations.

"We can't know what the environmental interactions really are, because microbes are too small for us to observe them in action," says Professor Martin Polz of MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), lead investigator on a study appearing in this week's issue of the journal Science. "But we think the antibiotics play a role in fending off competitors. Of course, those competitors could also produce antibiotics. It's a potential arms race out there."

A population of ocean microbes is defined by genetic likeness and shared ecological activities, such as their preferred microhabitat -- say, free-floating or attached to algae -- or their ability to harvest a particular substance. Because close relatives within populations have very similar if not identical resource requirements, they must by necessity also be strong competitors with one another.

This makes cooperation involving antibiotics doubly surprising, because the ability to produce antibiotics is a classic example of a "selfish" gene that ought to increase the fitness -- or reproductive rate -- of the individual carrying the gene. In a strictly competitive environment, the microbe would use this advantage against its closest relatives. But now it looks as if this competition is modulated by social interactions where antibiotics produced by a few individuals act as "public goods": items that benefit the group, rather than just the individual.

This differentiation of populations into individuals that produce antibiotics and those that are resistant is one of the first demonstrations that microbial populations engage in a division of labor by social role. This observation also provides an explanation for why so many genes are patchily distributed across genomes of closely related microbes. At least some of these genes may be responsible for creating tightly knit social units of bacteria in the wild.

"It's easy to imagine bacteria in the environment as selfish creatures capable only of reproducing as fast as conditions allow, without any social organization," says Otto Cordero, a CEE postdoc who is a first author on the Science paper. "But that is the mind-blowing part: Bacterial wars are organized along the lines of populations, which are groups of closely related individuals with similar ecological activities."

The study also uncovers an untapped source of antibiotics that could have the potential to aid in the fight against human bacterial pathogens, which are rapidly developing resistance to the few antibiotics in use -- nearly all of which are produced by soil-living bacteria.

"This paper [shows] that bacteria work together in complex relationships that have largely been underappreciated by the research community as a whole," says Gerry Wright, a professor of biochemistry and biomedical sciences and director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research at McMaster University. He adds, "The impact on our understanding of resistance is critical. ? This work is really important in showing that we can, in fact, study these big questions in populations of natural bacteria, and we can learn something important about how we use antibiotics and avoid resistance in the clinic."

To obtain these findings, the researchers tested about 35,000 interactions among pairs of 185 strains of Vibrionaceae bacteria populations taken from the ocean. They found that 44 percent of the strains were able to inhibit the growth of at least one other strain and 86 percent were inhibited by at least one other strain. They then used genomic analysis to determine genetic kinship.
