Nikkei up after Japan gets nod from G7 on stimulus

BANGKOK (AP) ? Japan's stock market jumped Monday after global finance leaders gave a seal of approval to the country's stimulus program and refrained from criticizing its weakening effect on the yen. Stocks were mixed elsewhere in Asia.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo shot up 1.6 percent to 14,838.08. The index has soared nearly 43 percent since the beginning of the year.

Finance leaders from the world's seven leading industrialized economies said at a meeting over the weekend in Britain that Japan's stimulus policies are aimed at boosting the domestic economy, which has been mired in stagnation since the 1990s, and not manipulating the yen.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, elected late last year on promises to revive the world's third-largest economy, has implemented a policy mix of increased public spending and aggressive monetary easing.

One result has been a dramatic fall in the value of the yen, which helps the country's export industries by making products more affordable in overseas markets while increasing the value of repatriated profits. On Thursday, the dollar rose above 100 yen for the first time in more than four years.

Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi was nearly unchanged at 1,944.41. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.8 percent to 23,127.48. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.2 percent after banking shares slid.

Commodities such as gold and oil fell Friday as the U.S. dollar continues to appreciate against the yen and other currencies. When the dollar rises against other currencies, it tends to weaken demand for commodities, hurting resource-related shares.

Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Group, China's largest gold miner, fell 2.6 percent. Japanese energy explorer Inpex Corp. tumbled 5.6 percent.

On Wall Street on Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.2 percent to close at 15,118.49. The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 0.4 percent to 1,633.70. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.8 percent to 3,436.58.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down 78 cents to $95.26 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 35 cents to $96.04 per barrel in Nymex trading on Friday in New York.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2974 from $1.2983 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 101.87 yen from 101.53 yen.

Yahoo Acquires Location-Based Mobile Gaming Company Loki ...

Yahoo on Friday acquired Loki Studios, according to an announcement on the location-based gaming company?s website. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but this appears to be another acqui-hire, meaning Yahoo is more interested in the firm?s employees than the actual firm.

?Today we welcomed Loki Studios to the Yahoo! mobile team,? a Yahoo spokesperson told TNW in a statement. ?Their experience in community and location-based mobile services is impressive and we?re excited to have them on the team.?

Loki Studios was co-founded by Computer Science students from Stanford University. It focused on ?combining engaging game design with the features unique to the next generation of mobile devices.?

The gaming company?s team page lists eight employees but the announcement note is only signed by seven individuals. It appears Jessica Lee, the UI/UX Designer, won?t be going over to Yahoo.

Loki Studios mainly developed iOS games, but it also planned to build ?similarly complementary Facebook games, desktop games, and console games.? The company said it intended ?to become the world?s most recognized game franchise? ? but those dreams have likely been put aside, at least for now.

According to Loki Studios? announcement, the employees are moving on from mobile gaming and will instead put their efforts into just mobile:

We are thrilled to be joining the exceptional folks at Yahoo!. We believe fully in their commitment to creating outstanding mobile products. We are excited to learn from, work with, and contribute to one of the most well-known pioneers of the tech industry.

Their flagship game was titled Geomon, called by some as a game that ?brought location to Pokemon.? The team explained how location made its game unique:

After recent deaths, health is new priority in rap

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Hip-hop may need a checkup.

The culture that in the 1990s lost its brightest stars to gun violence has in recent years seen a series of notable rappers die of drug- and health-related causes. Since 2011, hip-pop pioneer Heavy D, singer and rap chorus specialist Nate Dogg and New York rapper Tim Dog all died of ailments in their 40s. Kriss Kross rapper Chris Kelly was found dead last week in Atlanta of a suspected drug overdose at 34.

Some of the genre's elder statesmen say they're worried about the culture's focus on youth, current emphasis on freewheeling partying and "you only live once" ethos, as popularized by Drake's 2011 hit "The Motto."

"Hip-hop being a lifestyle culture ... a part of American culture, you have to be mindful that somebody is going to grow old, age," said rap pioneer Melle Mel. "At some point somebody has to realize that hip-hop has to learn how to grow up. It's way too juvenile and it's been that way for too long."

The 51-year-old rapper, who memorably warned in 1982's "The Message" about urban youth who "lived so fast and died so young," said he suffers chronic bronchitis from being around marijuana and cigarette smoke when he was performing. Of course, heavy drug use in hip-hop or rock is hardly new: Cowboy of his Furious Five group died in 1989 "basically from getting high," Melle Mel said.

"It's not really worth it to literally party yourself to death. It's like committing suicide," he added. "You have to choose between what makes you feel good and what makes you think you feel good."

Other influential rappers who've died in their 30s in the last decade include Southern rap pioneer Pimp C and Wu-Tang Clan's Ol Dirty Bastard, both from drug overdose.

Lifestyle isn't to blame for all fatal health problems in hip-hop. Smooth-voiced Midwesterner MC Breed died of kidney failure in 2008 at age 37. Soulful producer J Dilla died in 2006 at age 32 of complications from lupus. Cancer killed rappers Guru in 2010 at 48 and Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys last year at 47.

One of the genre's top stars, Lil Wayne, has inadvertently focused attention on the issue. After he was hospitalized for multiple seizures, the 30-year-old rapper told a Los Angeles radio station in March that he's an epileptic.

As some of the genre's more well-known figures hit their late 30s and 40s, they've figured out ways to keep up appearances in public while also keeping their health. 50 Cent said he rarely drinks alcohol anymore. That "bottle full of bub" he's holding in nightclubs nowadays isn't what you think.

"I want to live a good long healthy life. So I'm health-conscious," the 37-year-old rapper-actor said. "You never see me drink. If you did see me with a bottle, it had ginger ale in it."

Though he's still a heavy marijuana smoker, Snoop Dogg said he stopped drinking alcohol at clubs six years ago after suspecting that a woman put the sedative Rohypnol ? widely known as a "date-rape drug" ? in one of his drinks.

"I used to drink alcohol as a fashion statement. If you in the club, they bringing you bottles, bringing you drinks. And you're just drinking because you're drinking. I don't do that anymore. I drink water or cranberry juice," he said. "I'm not cheap. I just don't want to do this to my body anymore. I want to survive."

Snoop, 41, said his focus on health comes from his desire to remain competitive and relevant to a genre that's largely focused on youth.

"Because when we perform, we don't have as much energy," he said. "So now we've got to get up and work out, do push-ups or jumping jacks, or whatever we've got to do to keep ourselves looking good and feeling good. Because one thing about an old man ? he don't ever want to feel like he old. So to me that's my personal push is to be able to compete with the youngsters and to be able to dance with them so to speak. ... Because when they welcome you into their world as far as being on a song, you're not old. You're accepted."

For producer and rapper RZA, hip-hop's emphasis on youth stems from an urban culture that since the '80s has had trouble planning for the future.

"They said we should be dead or in jail by the age of 25. And I think we live like that," the 43-year-old Wu-Tang Clan founder said. "But what happens when you make it past 25? What happens when you make it to 30? What happens when you make it to 40? Are you prepared for life now?"

Influenced by "Eastern philosophy" and his famous obsession with martial arts films, RZA said he's been a vegetarian for 15 years and practices qigong movement and breathing.

"Think of the great artists like Biggie Smalls and Tupac, who made some of the greatest hip-hop music of all time. But they didn't make it past 25," he said. "They didn't even become a man. ODB was just becoming a man. What I want to tell the hip-hop generation out there is that: There's a chance you're going to become a man. Be prepared for it."

New efforts to curb cellphone theft

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Disturbed by the nationwide epidemic of cellphone robberies and thefts, law enforcement officials across the country are looking to the wireless industry to help find a cure.

In San Francisco, where half the robberies were phone-related last year, District Attorney George Gascon is calling on major companies in nearby Silicon Valley to create new technology such as a "kill switch" to permanently and quickly disable stolen smart phones, making them worthless to thieves.

The prosecutor said he's recently had two discussions with Apple, maker of the popular iPhone, and has talked informally with Google, creator of the Android, the world's most popular operating smartphone platform. And, he also wants to meet with Samsung, the global smartphone market leader.

"We know that the technology can be developed to prevent this. This is more about social responsibility than economic gain," Gascon said.

The stakes are huge in the battle to combat cellphone theft. Nearly 175 million cellphones ? mostly smartphones? have been sold in the U.S. in the past year and account for $69 billion in sales, according to IDC, a Massachusetts-based research firm.

And, now almost one out of three robberies nationwide involves the theft of a mobile phone, reports the Federal Communications Commission, which is coordinating formation this fall of a highly-anticipated national database system to track cellphones reported stolen.

The FCC is also working with officials in Mexico to crack down on the trafficking of stolen mobile phones that make it across the border.

San Francisco's district attorney is not the only high-ranking big-city law official seeking solutions.

In Washington D.C, where than 40 percent of its robberies in 2012 involved cellphones, police Chief Cathy Lanier said new federal laws are necessary to require all wireless providers to participate in the national stolen phones database, which is now done by choice.

"This is a voluntary agreement and the decision makers, heads of these (wireless) companies may transition over time and may not be in the same position five years from now." Lanier said in an email. "Something needs to be put in place to protect consumers."

On the theory that an inoperable phone is as useless as a "brick," Lanier and Mayor Vincent Gray also have urged residents who have their phones stolen to call their carriers and ask that the device be "bricked," or disconnected remotely to prevent resale on the black market.

In New York City, police have created a smartphone squad and partnered with Apple to track down stolen iPhones using the device's tracking number. For example, when an iPhone is stolen, Apple can report to police where the phone is located, even if it's been switched to a different carrier.

Police said the city's overall crime rate last year increased three percent mostly due to the more than 15,000 thefts of Apple-related products ? a majority of them iPhones ? said Paul Browne, a police spokesman.

"We would've had a one percent decrease in overall crime if you subtracted the Apple thefts," said Browne, adding that police have coined the phenomenon, "Apple-picking."

"We're trying to protect the orchard, so to speak," Browne said.

He added that police often use officers as decoys using their own iPhones to catch would-be robbers and stings to catch those who sell them on the black market. About 75 percent of the stolen devices stay within the city's five boroughs and some have been tracked down as far as the Dominican Republic.

In addition, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has been working with U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, the FCC and CTIA, a trade group for wireless providers, on the national stolen phone database, along with six of the largest wireless companies.

Computer security expert Darren Hayes said law enforcement agencies, major corporations and the wireless industry have responded slowly to the spike in mobile phone thefts, leaving individuals as well as businesses vulnerable.

"Smartphones have become such an extension of our lives with all of our personal information on them and criminals recognizing its mass appeal," said Hayes, a professor and computer information systems program chair at Pace University in New York. "Professionally, there are some corporate network administrators who can control their company servers from their smartphone. While it's convenient, it could also put them at risk and could be the biggest source of data loss if they are stolen.

"We could see a potential nightmare emerging," Hayes said.

Jamie Hastings, a CTIA vice president, said the national stolen phone database is a step in the right direction and deserves a chance.

"To suggest that our members don't care about their consumers is completely inaccurate," Hastings said. "Our members are now focusing their energies on the database and achieving the start-up goal by November. The important thing at this stage is to allow our members to execute the plan that all of the stakeholders agreed upon."

The national database will be similar to a global database devised by GSMA, a wireless trade group based in the United Kingdom. Nearly 100 wireless companies across 43 countries participate in the overseas database for reported stolen mobile phones, said Claire Cranton, a GSMA spokeswoman in London.

But Gascon said a national network to track stolen phones comes up short and he is adamant that a kill switch is the best strategy to render a phone useless.

In March, he met with Apple's government liaison officer Michael Foulkes to talk about creating a kill switch technology. He described the encounter as "disappointing" but said a subsequent phone conversation with Apple's general counsel Bruce Sewell last month led to plans for talks that would include Apple's technical people.

Representatives of the tech giant did not respond to requests for comment.

"For me, a technical solution is probably better than just a criminal solution," Gascon said. "We can always create more laws, but look at how long it already takes to prosecute somebody at the expense of the taxpayers?

"If a phone can be inoperable at the flick of a switch, then a database will become moot."

Astronaut Spies 'Bullet Hole' in Space Station Solar Wing (Photo)

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have dodged a cosmic bullet ... literally.

A small piece of space junk or naturally occurring celestial debris created the tiny hole in one of the space station's wing-like solar arrays at some point in the outpost's 14-year history in orbit. Canadian Space Agency astronaut Chris Hadfield spotted the puncture and posted a photo of it on Twitter on Monday (April 29).

"Bullet hole ? a small stone from the universe went through our solar array," Hadfield wrote, suspecting the hole was caused by a tiny space rock called a micrometeoroid. "Glad it missed the hull." [Chris Hadfield's Video Guide to Life in Space]

NASA experts estimate that millions of micrometeorites and bits of man-made debris orbit the Earth in the range of operational satellites and the space station. These shards of satellites, rockets and rocky debris are traveling at an average speed of 22,000 mph (35,406 km/h). The space station, for comparison, orbits the Earth at a speed of about 17,500 mph (28,164 km/h).

"The 'bullet' that created the hole in the solar array was probably due to a 1 mm to 2 mm diameter MMOD [micrometeoroids and orbital debris] impact, assuming the hole was on the order of 0.25 inches in diameter," William Jeffs, a NASA spokesperson told SPACE.com in an email. "A 2 mm size MMOD particle is expected to hit somewhere on [the International Space Station] every 6 months or so."

If the piece of space debris were to collide with the hull, the space station's shielding would probably protect the crew from being adversely impacted, Jeffs added.

NASA scientists regularly track pieces of space debris larger than 4 inches (10 centimeters) across in order to avoid potentially destructive collisions. Radar systems track these larger pieces of space junk to alert space station operators and satellite controllers to any threats.

"Collision with these particles can cause serious damage or catastrophic failure to spacecraft or satellites and is a life-threatening risk to astronauts conducting extra-vehicular activities in space," NASA officials from the agency's Johnson Space Center wrote on the White Sands Test Facility website.

The International Space Station can maneuver out of the way of larger meteoroids and bits of debris if their orbits are tracked well ahead of time.

Particles smaller than 4 inches (10 cm) and larger than 0.4 inches (1 cm) pose a unique problem for tracking efforts, however.

"Fortunately, small particles less than 1 cm pose less of a catastrophic threat, but they do cause surface abrasions and microscopic holes to spacecraft and satellites," NASA officials said. "The greatest challenge is medium-size particles (objects with a diameter between 1 cm to 10 cm), because they are not easily tracked and are large enough to cause catastrophic damage to spacecraft and satellites."

In total, NASA estimates that about 95 percent of all objects in orbit around the Earth are debris and not active satellites.

Director Wayne Blair -- another veteran of the stage show -- finds his footing during the film's many musical numbers.

Despite the prosaic plot and reserved approach taken by Blair, Briggs, and Thompson, it's tough to get cynical about such a warmhearted picture that strives to tell so uplifting a story.

A movie with enough melody and camaraderie to cover up its lack of originality.

Draining most of the blood, sweat and tears from a true story, this music-minded movie capably covers a song we've heard a hundred times before.

"Sapphires," which was inspired by a true story, is propelled by a strong sense of music's power to connect people and change lives.

Fires on all cylinders when it drops all pretense and allows its talented cast to simply belt out a series of pure, unfiltered slices of ear candy.

A rousing soundtrack helps to compensate for some of the historical embellishments in this Australian crowd-pleaser.

Tom Ricketts finally played the card used by so many other owners in professional sports: The threat to move.

While it still seems unthinkable that the Cubs would actually leave Wrigley Field, Ricketts opened up that possibility on Wednesday for the first time. As the $500 million renovation project moved into the public-approval phase, the chairman went all-in with the Jumbotron.

?If we don?t have the ability to generate revenue in our own outfield, then we?ll have to take a look at moving,? Ricketts said. ?No question.?

Ricketts ? who associates have described as sometimes being too nice of a guy ? definitely sounded edgier, on point and more combative speaking with reporters after a City Club of Chicago event. The guests inside the downtown Maggiano?s banquet hall included Rosemont Mayor Brad Stephens, who?s grabbed headlines by trying to lure the Cubs out to O?Hare International Airport. ?

Those kinds of ideas sounded like total non-starters ever since the Ricketts family finalized the $845 million purchase of the team ? as well as a stake in Comcast SportsNet Chicago ? from Tribune Co. in October 2009 and made repeated pledges to stay at Clark and Addison.

?We are committed to trying to work this out,? Ricketts said. ?We?ve always said that we want to win in Wrigley Field. But we also need to generate the revenue that we need to continue to compete as a franchise. And having the ability to put the video board or signs in the outfield is very important to us. It?s a primary focus of what we do going forward.?

The Cubs project they could make $20 million more annually in advertising revenue without the signage restrictions. They are also locked into a contract with the rooftop buildings that runs through the end of the 2023 season. They envision a 6,000-square-foot Jumbotron rising beyond left field.

Ricketts said the Cubs tried to ?minimize? the impact on the rooftops with these designs and didn?t sound at all concerned about a possible legal fight. The team filed development plans with the city on Wednesday, officially beginning what will be a series of public hearings, zoning negotiations and neighborhood meetings.

Beth Murphy ? the owner of Murphy?s Bleachers and spokesperson for the Wrigleyville Rooftops Association ??didn?t get a sneak peek and seemed to be still processing her first looks at the renderings. A reporter asked if her group is still considering a lawsuit.?

?I know you all want me to say that,? Murphy said. ?We have work to do with the Cubs. We haven?t had a seat at the table and we haven?t had legal representation.?

More than two weeks after announcing the ?framework? of an agreement with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Alderman Tom Tunney, the Cubs still have to address a variety of neighborhood concerns, from the number of night games, to the size of the video board, to how Sheffield and Waveland would be used for street fests.

Murphy was asked if she viewed moving as an empty threat: ?I don?t think it would be a wise business decision.?

?The reason the Cubs are such a tourist destination,? Murphy said, ?is because it?s a ballpark in a neighborhood. (It?s) an interesting place for tourists to come to ? I don?t think a new ballpark in a parking lot is interesting.?

As these talks drag out ? team executives made a splashy presentation with sketches at Cubs Convention in January ? the baseball operations department risks losing the upgrades promised by Opening Day 2014.?

Ricketts confirmed that the new clubhouse, batting tunnels and training facilities depend on when the Cubs green light construction for the five consecutive offseasons it will take to complete the entire project.?

?We?ll know the timetable better when we get to the end of this process,? Ricketts said. ?That will really help us decide when we can do what.?

But the Cubs are not a flight risk. The Ricketts family has been strategically buying up property on the North Side, including the lot across from the Wrigley Field marquee, where the plan is to develop a 175-room hotel along with Starwood.??

?The Yankees are the most storied baseball franchise there is,? first baseman Anthony Rizzo said, ?and they tore down the original stadium and built a brand-new one. (This is) going to be something special.

?I know Mr. Ricketts wants to win. He?s building a winning environment here. He?s going to do whatever it takes to (do) what needs to be done. He wants to bring a championship here, whether it?s at Wrigley or not. We all want it to be at Wrigley.?

Ricketts is playing hardball now, and that?s going to overshadow all the cool drawings for the future.

?Keep it in context,? Ricketts said. ?The talk of moving is relative to being able to have our flexibility in the outfield. I think everything else is going forward.?
