Former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez walked into the MGM Grand arena to a chorus of boos but departed with a chorus of cheers as he bulldozed past Brazil?s Junior Dos Santos to regain the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title by unanimous decision on Saturday.
Ironically, it was Dos Santos who heard the boos this time.
?It feels good,? said Velasquez.
It was sweet revenge for Velasquez (11-1) who dominated Dos Santos (15-2) in almost every aspect of the mixed martial arts title fight in UFC 155. The building was filled to the top to see if the Mexican-American fighter could avenge his knockout loss to Dos Santos.
Velasquez promised to return to his strength and immediately set forth in the first round by pressuring Dos Santos relentlessly with attempted take downs. Suddenly, an overhand right dropped Dos Santos, who was definitely hurt. From that point on Velasquez dominated the rest of the five rounds.
?He?s a tough dude, you know what I mean,? said Velasquez. ?The overhand right I learned from my pops.?
It didn?t look good for Dos Santos, who was taken down repeatedly with ease by the Mexican-American. Velasquez pounded and pounded the Brazilian who looked ready to be knocked out but stayed in the fight. Round two was a huge round for Velasquez, but Dos Santos survived.
?The punch was very ok. It?s very usual for me to take a punch,? said Dos Santos of absorbing big blows from Velasquez. ?His take downs and his grappling game is very effective.?
The third round saw Dos Santos look a little more feisty in the beginning, but the constant pressure by Velasquez tired out the Brazilian again as he punched and punched with little in return.
Dos Santos had his best round in the fourth with some elbow shots and right hands. But Velasquez was a different fighter this time around, he muscled his way past the blows and took down Dos Santos again. A left to the body seemed to affect the Brazilian, who tried his best to rally.
In the final round a left to the body by Dos Santos looked promising but Velasquez took down the Brazilian again. A ground and pound attack ensued and when Dos Santos got back up, he was met with a right kick to the head followed by a long right cross. All three judges scored it for Velasquez, 50-45, 50-43, 50-44.
?This fight was the hardest fight I?ve been through,? said Velasquez. ?All my coaches helped me so much.?
After the fight Dos Santos was surprised to hear boos but congratulated the new champion.
?His game is very fast. Tonight he was better than me,? said Dos Santos. ?I?m going to come back and I?m going to take my belt again.?
Other bouts
It was a match that looked great on paper, putting Jim Miller (22-4) against Joe Lauzon (22-8). In the Octagon it was even better than that. New Jersey?s Miller jumped to an early and bloody lead against Boston?s Lauzon behind some pounding left and right hand shots. It looked bad for Lauzon.
Miller returned to pounding the bloodied Lauzon in round two but made a critical mistake by taking the fight to the ground. Lauzon took advantage and was able to turn the momentum. But both fighters and the floor were so bloody neither was able to gain a submission hold.
Not wanting to repeat his mistake, Miller kept the fight standing up and peppered Lauzon with shots for nearly five minutes. Then, suddenly, Lauzon attempted a submission hold with a heel hook but failed. He then tried a guillotine choke and ran out of time. All three judges scored it for Miller 29-28.
?I knew I was going to have to give everything I had,? said Miller. ?I didn?t want the judges or doctors to stop it.?
New York?s Costa Philippou (12-2) battered Tim Boetsch (16-5) with a ground and pound attack that forced the referee to stop the fight at 2:11 of round three. Boetsch jumped out to an early lead with his grappling but seemed to suffer some kind of injury and Philippou took advantage. After an accidental clash of heads and some punches added, a bloodied Boetsch sustained enough damage for the referee to stop the fight by technical knockout.
Japan?s Yushin Okami (29-7) beat Alan Belcher (17-6) with a dominating ground game and pinned the American fighter every round in their middleweight rematch of six years ago. Belcher could only manage a couple of stiff right hands but other than that, he was on the bottom looking up. Two judges scored it 30-27 and the other 29-28 all for Okami.
?My game plan was to use all the tools that Team Quest taught me. The wrestling, striking and the clinch game were all successfully implemented in this fight to defeat Belcher. Belcher is a very tough opponent and I feel that a win over Belcher should allow me to keep challenging more of the top guys in the middleweight division,? said Okami.
Derek Brunson (10-2) beat UFC veteran Chris Leben (22-9) by unanimous decision after three rounds of a middleweight fight. Brunson used take downs to tire out the stone-chinned Leben who looked slow after a lengthy absence from the Octagon. All three judges scored it 29-28 for Brunson, who was making his UFC debut.
I?m at a fork on the parenting road. And I don?t know which way to turn. Frankly, I?d like to turn back and go home, but unfortunately that?s not an option?
On the left of the fork is the road that leads to activities the kids are enrolled in outside of the home. Hockey, gymnastics, soccer and piano, plus swimming. It sounds crazy, when I look at the list, especially when I realize I missed ball-hockey and Sonja?s never-ending requests for playdates. There?s school and homework in that as well, which requires parental supervision. It all sounds like it?s too much.
On the right of the fork the road leads to an empty space. No activities, only family time and home-time. We could sit and play lego, board games or paint together, we could take excursions into the many parks out our way, we could go skating, tobogganing or just walking and playing outside when the snow is fresh and deep. We could cook together, bake together, and just hang out, maybe pop a movie in once in a while. We could just BE.
We did the second option for 5 years. The kids were young, we did crafts, we spend many hours walking and playing at the playground, or having picnics or making snowmen. Then they got older, started school, and they developed interests of their own. They received countless invites to birthday parties, and I was forced to start a spreadsheet with phone numbers of all their friends they made?their social lives became busy and complicated. And they?re only 7 and 5?
We had a family night last night. Actually, we spent the bulk of the holidays together, sometimes with extended family, sometimes just us. We spent some of that time at the rink, but we also spent some of that time just doing things together alone, just the 4 of us. Yet as the holidays draw to a close, it?s becoming more evident that especially Sonja, who is not in an activity unlike Ben with his tournament, is craving playtime with her friends.
She is getting harder to handle. Is it her age? Is it me? Is it just a clash in personalities? She is an extrovert, and very VERY confident in what she wants and when she wants it. She was like this as a baby and I wondered even back then what kind of a child she was going to turn into.
Sonja needs activities, it seems, that go beyond family time. As long as the family time balances out the out-of-the-house activities, she seems more even-tempered. I have noticed this over time and find her easier and more pleasant to be around when she has that balance met.
She has to go to gymnastics. Indoor soccer will give her that extra bit of team-oriented-endless-running activity that is harder to do in snowsuits outside in the frigid air, and when she accompanies us to the rink during one of Ben?s hockey sessions, she has several children to play with while we watch a game or practice. This too satisfies her social needs. And she?s back in the pool after a term off.
I don?t know how I?m going to handle it all, but there it is.
Ben has hockey and hockey and more hockey. But his dad takes care of most of that. He is also in swimming, but the kids are now in the same class which will make life easier for us. And he gets to start piano lessons. He loves music but it always conflicted with hockey, so after two years of music, he had to choose. I finally found a night where the potential for hockey conflict is minimal plus Sonja is occupied in soccer at the same time.
Perfect.
Only, I don?t feel like it?s so perfect. I feel like the calendar is so full, I?m not sure I can actually wrap my head around how this will all work out.
How do people who work full-time outside of the home manage these crazy schedules? Do they just drop off on all the activities? When does one do the grocery shopping? Cooking? Are we resigned to start ordering in more often now?
I hope not. I?m going to keep using my crockpot, and if I have to get groceries delivered via a service to help manage my time better, then I will consider that option too.
Time will tell what will happen next. In the meantime, we still have a whole week of home-time, family-time, and I plan on getting organized with, hopefully, the kids? help.
I?ve become one of *those* parents who schedules her kids.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama was preparing to present a limited fiscal proposal to congressional leaders at a White House meeting Friday, a make-or-break moment for negotiations to avoid across-the-board tax increases and deep spending cuts at the first of the year.
Lawmakers and White House officials held out a slim hope for a deal before the new year, but it remained unclear whether congressional passage of legislation palatable to both sides was even possible.
The Friday afternoon meeting among congressional leaders and the president ? their first since Nov. 16 ? was likely to center on which income thresholds would face higher tax rates, extending unemployment insurance, and preventing a cut in Medicare payments to doctors, among other issues.
For Obama, the eleventh-hour scramble represented a test of how he would balance strength derived from his re-election against an avowed commitment to compromise in the face of divided government. Despite early talk of a grand bargain between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that would reduce deficits by more than $2 trillion, the expectations were now far less ambitious.
Although there were no guarantees of a deal, Republicans and Democrats said privately that any agreement would likely include an extension of middle-class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes, an Obama priority that was central to his re-election campaign.
A key question was whether Obama would agree to abandon his insistence during the campaign on raising taxes on households earning more than $250,000 a year and instead accept a $400,000 threshold like the one he offered in negotiations with Boehner. Another was whether Republicans would seek a higher income threshold.
The deal would also likely put off the scheduled spending cuts. Such a year-end bill could also include an extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring, officials said.
If a deal was not possible, it would become evident at Friday's White House meeting, and Obama and the leaders would leave a resolution for the next Congress to address in January.
Such a delay could unnerve the stock market, which edged lower for a fifth day Friday amid worries that lawmakers would fail to reach a budget deal. Economists say that if the tax increases are allowed to hit most Americans and if the spending cuts aren't scaled back, the recovering but fragile economy could sustain a traumatizing shock.
Obama called for the meeting as top lawmakers on Thursday alternately cast blame on each other while portraying themselves as open to a reasonable last-minute bargain.
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid all but conceded that any effort at this late date was a long shot. "I don't know timewise how it can happen now," he said.
The No. 2 Senate GOP leader, Jon Kyl of Arizona, said it is "pretty unlikely" that Senate Republicans would agree to legislation averting the fiscal cliff if it wouldn't pass muster in the House.
"If you know the House isn't going to do something, why go through the charade?" he told reporters. "That becomes political gamesmanship."
Obama and Reid, D-Nev., would have to propose a package that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would agree not to block with procedural steps that require 60 votes to overcome.
Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York said he still thinks a deal could be struck.
The Democrat told NBC's "Today" show Friday that he believes the "odds are better than people think."
Schumer said he based his optimism on indications that McConnell has gotten "actively engaged" in the talks.
Appearing on the same show, Republican Sen. John Thune noted the meeting scheduled later Friday at the White House, saying "it's encouraging that people are talking."
But Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., predicted that "the worst-case scenario" could emerge from Friday's talks.
"We will kick the can down the road," he said on "CBS This Morning."
"We'll do some small deal and we'll create another fiscal cliff to deal with the fiscal cliff," he said. Corker complained that there has been "a total lack of courage, lack of leadership," in Washington.
If a deal were to pass the Senate, Boehner would have to agree to take it to the floor in the Republican-controlled House.
Boehner discussed the fiscal cliff with Republican members in a conference call Thursday and advised them that the House would convene Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, said Boehner told the lawmakers that "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."
But Cole did not rule out Republican support for some increase in tax rates, noting that Boehner had amassed about 200 Republican votes for a plan last week to raise rates on Americans earning $1 million or more. Boehner ultimately did not put the plan to a House floor vote in the face of opposition from Republican conservatives and a unified Democratic caucus.
"The ultimate question is whether the Republican leaders in the House and Senate are going to push us over the cliff by blocking plans to extend tax cuts for the middle class," White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said. "Ironically, in order to protect tax breaks for millionaires, they will be responsible for the largest tax increase in history."
Boehner, McConnell, Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi are all scheduled to attend Friday's White House meeting with Obama. Vice President Joe Biden will also participate in the meeting, the White House said.

ACCRA (Reuters) - Ghana's main opposition party on Friday asked the West African nation's top court to overturn the result of a December 7 presidential election won by incumbent President John Dramani Mahama over what the party's leader called irregularities.
The poll, which passed peacefully despite technical problems that forced voting into a second day, was seen as a test of stability for one of Africa's most mature democracies and fastest growing economies.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader Nana Akufo-Addo, who came second in the closely fought contest that observers said appeared fair, said his party had evidence to show there were enough irregularities to affect the outcome.
"A few minutes ago a petition was filed at the registry of the Supreme Court, challenging the validity of the result of the presidential election," Akufo-Addo told a news conference in Accra.
"This case is not about candidate Mahama or candidate Akufo-Addo. There is a much more important issue at stake which goes to the heart of our democracy and the future of our nation," he said.
The Electoral Commission declared Mahama winner with 50.7 percent of valid ballots to Akufo-Addo's 47.7 percent.
After the poll, Mahama urged Akufo-Addo and other opposition figures to join him "as partners" in improving Ghana, but said his rivals had a right to take their grievances to court.
Mahama, who initially took over from former President John Atta Mills after his death in July, is expected to be sworn in on January 7 to begin a full four-year mandate.
The gold, cocoa and oil exporting country has managed more than 30 years of democratic transfers of power, making it an anomaly in West Africa's so called "coup belt" of countries plagued by instability.

VIENNA (AP) ? A tiny pony is back at its Austrian circus home more than a week after apparently being kidnapped by a woman who wanted to give her sick daughter a Christmas surprise.
Fridolin the pony, who is only about 2 feet (60 centimeters) tall, went missing from the Vienna Christmas Circus early last week. He was found near a Vienna bus stop Wednesday.
Circus director Adolf Lauenburger told the Austria Press Agency Thursday that a woman called the circus and told officials where to find the pony. She said her daughter wanted a circus pony and she'd taken him to fulfill the girl's wishes for Christmas ? but decided she couldn't keep the animal.
Lauenburger wasn't able to identify the woman. Police were looking into the matter.
Dec. 27, 2012 ? Australian scientists have shown how a 'transcription factor' causes breast cancer to develop an aggressive subtype that lacks sensitivity to estrogen and does not respond to anti-estrogen therapies such as Tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors.
Transcription factors are molecules that switch genes on or off. In this case, the transcription factor known as 'ELF5' inhibits sensitivity to estrogen very early in the life of a breast cancer cell.
In 2008, Associate Professor Chris Ormandy from Sydney's Garvan Institute of Medical Research showed that ELF5 was responsible for the development of the estrogen-receptor-negative cells in the breast during pregnancy that produce milk.
In the current study Ormandy, in collaboration with Drs Maria Kalyga and David Gallego-Ortega, has shown that the same molecular decision occurs in breast cancer and that ELF5 has the ability to change an existing tumour to an estrogen-insensitive type.
The team has also described the genetic mechanisms by which ELF5 opposes the action of estrogen, and has shown that it is possible to alter the subtype of breast cancer by manipulating ELF5 levels. The findings are published in the online journal PLoS Biology.
"This work tells us that cancers which become refractory to anti-estrogen treatment often do so by elevating their levels of ELF5 and becoming functionally estrogen receptor negative," said Ormandy.
"This raises the therapeutic option of manipulating ELF5 levels to treat breast cancer."
"As ELF5 is intracellular, this could possibly be done with small molecule therapies that target protein-to-protein interactions, or with small inhibitory RNAs."
"There is also the possibility of testing ELF5 levels in tumours to predict response to treatment and therefore guide treatment decisions."
"Our key discovery here is that by simply manipulating one transcription factor we can change the subtype of breast cancer."

A cholera outbreak in the Cuban capital of Havana may be related to flooding that occurred in eastern Cuba as a result of Hurricane Sandy in late October, according to a recent story from the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), an international not-for-profit group that focuses on issues in crisis-racked regions.?
A doctor who requested anonymity said 47 cases have been identified in Habana Vieja (Old Havana), a tourist area in the city center, and that 33 of the cases originated in the hurricane-hit areas.?
Authorities have responded to the outbreak by setting up special hospital wards, cleaning up streets and buildings in parts of Habana Vieja, and distributing medications to prevent dehydration, the story said.?
Meanwhile, in Holguin province in eastern Cuba, officials said Vladimir Lenis Hospital is admitting three to five new cholera patients daily.
This is one of those cases where the news is the absence of news. The IWPR report is a rehash of posts like this one on Hablemos Press, and now it's recycled again. But no one seems to be taking an interest in confirming a story going back to last summer?certainly not the official Cuban media, and not WHO, and even the Cuban exile media aren't talking much about it. Nor are the media of other Caribbean countries showing any interest.?
But there are certainly a lot of foreign correspondents in Cuba, and you'd expect at least one or two would be willing to risk being kicked out of the country if they could get something solid on the cholera story. Apparently not.
MOSCOW (Reuters) - International Syria envoy Lakhdar Brahimi will fly to Moscow on Saturday for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on how to end Syria's 21-month-old conflict, a Russian foreign ministry spokesman said.
Syrian diplomats earlier on Thursday entered the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow to discuss proposals for a peaceful resolution to the crisis following a diplomatic push by Brahimi in Damascus this week.
Plans made by Brahimi to broker a peaceful transfer of power in Syria will top the agenda when Lavrov and Brahimi meet on later this week, the foreign ministry spokesman said.

MOSCOW --?Russia's upper house of parliament approved a bill on Wednesday that would prohibit Americans from adopting Russian children and impose other measures in retaliation for a U.S. law designed to punish Russians accused of human rights violations.?
The bill would also outlaw some U.S.-funded non-governmental organizations and impose visa bans and asset freezes on Americans accused of violating the rights of Russians abroad.?
The bill was endorsed by the lower house last week and is now expected to be sent to President Vladimir Putin to sign.
Putin hasn't committed to signing the bill, but referred to it as a legitimate response to the new U.S. law.
It is one part of a larger measure by angry lawmakers retaliating against a recently signed U.S. law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators.?
The U.S. law is primarily intended to end Cold War-era trade restrictions and was hailed by U.S. businesses worried about falling behind in the race to win shares of Russia's more open market, but its human rights part has outraged Putin's government.
Dubbed the Magnitsky act, the U.S. legislation is named for Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested by officials he accused of a $230-million tax fraud.
He?was repeatedly denied medical treatment and in 2009 died after almost a year in jail after being severely beaten by guards.
Opportunity denied Some top Russian officials, including the foreign minister, have spoken flatly against the Russian bill, arguing that the measure would be in violation with Russia's constitution and international obligations.
Earlier Wednesday, several protesters were detained outside the upper house as it prepared to make its decision.

Americans may lose right to adopt Russian kids
There are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, according to UNICEF. More than 60,000 Russian children have been adopted in the United States in the past 20 years.
The Russian bill is named in honor of Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler who was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours.

The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Russian lawmakers argue that by banning adoptions to the U.S. they would be protecting children and encouraging adoptions inside Russia.
Russian children?s rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov told the Interfax news agency that 46 children who were about to be adopted by U.S. citizens would stay in Russia ? despite court rulings in some of these cases authorizing the adoptions.
Astakhov also insisted that all adoptions would be halted once the bill is signed by Putin, but a senior lawmaker at the Federation Council insisted it cannot be enacted immediately.
Mikhail Margelov, chairman of the Council's foreign affairs committee, said that a bilateral Russian-U.S. agreement binds Russia to notify of a halt in adoptions 12 months in advance.

We had a wonderful time celebrating with family. I?m so thankful to be with them for Christmas this year. Hunter had a pretty great Christmas too! He was fed some delicious eats and scored some awesome gifts. He?s a spoiled little guy already!

Baby?s size? The size of a cauliflower! He measures about 13.6 to 14.8 inches long and weighs about 1.5 to 2.5 pounds.
Total weight gain/loss: Not sure? Haven?t weighed myself this week.

Sleep: This past weekend wasn?t the best in the sleeping department, but I think it was because of the bed I was sleeping on if anything. The last few nights have been much better though!

Miss Anything? Lox and bagels (raw salmon, cream cheese, capers, & onion on a bagel) on Christmas morning. Love those things?
Movement: Oh yes! Lots of movement. It?s been so fun to see the reactions of several of my family members when they feel him move for the first time.
Food cravings: I?ve noticed that my love for salt continues, as well as carb-y foods (i.e. bread, pretzels, crackers, etc).

Symptoms: My hunger has been out of control this past week! I swear my belly grew quite a bit too, so I?m thinking Baby Hunter went through a little growth spurt.
Belly Button in or out? It?s pretty much an outie these days! You can see it poking through some of my tighter fitting tops.
Wedding rings on or off? On, but I have noticed a little bit of swelling in my hands and feet this past week. We?ll see how much longer the rings stay on!
Happy or moody most of the time: Happy! It helps that I?m with all my family. Can?t beat that!

The?401k contribution limits 2013?brings may not offer you the potential for growth that you want, but you will be able to rest easy knowing your money can?t be snatched away by relentless litigators. IRAs are usually protected under state law, but the implications of this disparity in protection may be enough to tip the scales.
It will be important to consider both sides of the coin when you decide whether or not to roll over your 401k. There is a down for every up, so make sure you look at all sides of the issue before making a decision. What?s right for most may not be right for you.

HONOLULU (AP) ? Margus Hunt knew he had eight hours to fill on the flight over the Pacific Ocean, so he asked the SMU staff to put together film of Fresno State for him to study. He hit the Bulldogs like a tidal wave Monday night in the Hawaii Bowl.
The 6-foot-8 defensive end raced around right tackle to blindside Derek Carr and force a fumble. Hunt smashed into running back Robbie Rouse on a delayed handoff and forced another fumble. On a three-man rush, he sacked Carr in the end zone for a safety.
It was an inspiring performance by the senior from Estonia, and it set the tone for the Mustangs' 43-10 win.
"That was a lot of fun," Hunt said. "We knew from the get-go it was going to be a Monday night football game, the only game in the nation. We wanted to show our skills and make some plays. To me personally ... this is where it all started. It's good to end on this note."
The Mustangs (7-6) also returned two interceptions for touchdowns, giving them eight for the season to tie the NCAA record set last year by Southern Miss. Hayden Greenbauer picked off Carr and returned it 83 yards with 1:14 left, the final blow to a miserable night for the Bulldogs (9-4).
SMU had seven sacks, more than double the most Fresno State had given up in a game all year.
Garrett Gilbert was effective with his arm and his legs, running for a 17-yard touchdown for the first score of the game and throwing a perfect strike to Darius Johnson for a 21-yard score to answer the Bulldogs' only touchdown. He rushed for 98 yards on 18 carries and threw for 212 yards.
But this game was decided by the Mustangs' defense, with Hunt leading the way. He was voted the game's MVP.
"We tried some slide protections to 92 (Hunt). You know, they beat us," Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. "We tried going empty to spread things out and get it out quick, we tried to max protect. Everything we tried didn't work."
Fresno State, the Mountain West Conference champion, has lost its last four bowl games.
SMU, which went 25 years without a bowl after its NCAA death penalty, now has played in a school-record four straight bowls, winning three of them. Hunt was a mystery when that run started in 2009, a gold medalist in the shot put and discus in Beijing at the 2006 Junior World Championships who came to SMU for track and field and turned to football when it was his only hope of scholarship money.
SMU coach June Jones has a knack for taking a chance on athletes from other sports, and he liked what he saw, from the 82-inch wing span to the 4.7 speed in the 40.
"It's not hard for me to see a world-class athlete who can run like that, has strength like that, has an arm length like that," Jones said. "The first scrimmage we had ... the only thing I didn't know was if he was going to be tough enough. The first play we ran a trap and hit him real hard, and he wanted to fight. I said, 'OK, we may have a player here.'
"His best football is ahead of him," Jones said. "I was really excited, on a national stage, for him to have that kind of a game."
The Bulldogs turned in a dud.
Fresno State, which had averaged just over 47 points in its last five games, was shut out in the first half for the first time in two years. Carr was too busy running for his life to get the Bulldogs into any kind of offensive rhythm. And when the Bulldogs finally scored with 10:21 left in the third quarter, Gilbert led the Mustangs on a 75-yard drive that he finished with a pinpoint pass to Johnson in the corner for a touchdown.
"That drive there put the game away in essence," Gilbert said. "For us to respond like that and put six points on that board was big."
It allowed Jones to walk out of Aloha Stadium with yet another win.
He was the coach at Hawaii for eight years, leaving after its unbeaten regular season in 2007. Jones now has won 10 straight games in Aloha Stadium, dating to a December 2006 loss to Oregon State.
"I just want to say 'Aloha' to the seniors," Jones said during the trophy presentation. "We said we were going to do it and we did it."
Without hardly breaking a sweat.
The 10 points matched the fewest Fresno State has scored this year, dating to its 20-10 loss to Boise State. Carr was 33-of-54 passing for 362 yards, but most of that came late in the game when the Bulldogs were trying to catch up.
He was overwhelmed by the Mustangs' defensive front, particularly Hunt, who had two sacks, two forced fumbles and three tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
"When you go three-and-out, it feels like there's no rhythm at all," Carr said.
After a dull, scoreless opening quarter, Gilbert shook off one tackle and scored on a 17-yard run. The defense took over from there.
Hunt blew past right tackle Alex Fifita and blindsided Carr, dropping him flat as the ball came loose and was scooped up by Aaron Davis, who returned it 23 yards to the Fresno State 16 until he fumbled it out of bounds. SMU had to settle for a field goal. On the next series, Carr scrambled backward and couldn't escape an 18-yard sack to the 6, and then Hunt sacked him in the end zone for a safety.
Hunt wasn't finished. On second-and-7 from the 33, Carr gave it to Robbie Rouse on a delayed handoff, right about the time Hunt showed up to disrupt the play and cause another fumble that Taylor Reed recovered. That drive went backward, and Chase Hover connected from 48 yards.
Jones' only concern was having to settle for field goals, fearing that might come back to haunt the Mustangs given Fresno State's explosive offensive. Not to worry. The SMU defense dominated to the very last score.
