Mathews hopeful of bowling plenty of overs ? Cricket News Update

Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka?s premier all-rounder, has expressed his eagerness to contribute more with the ball when his side takes on Australia in the upcoming three-match Test series.

Being among the most consistent players over the past 18 months, Mathews has easily established himself as an indispensable member of the Test team. However, it was his time with the bat which earned him praise, as compared to his bowling stints.

He again emerged as the team?s best player during the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand, topping the scoring chart for his side with two-half centuries. His levelheadedness and ability to handle pressure will most likely see him being given additional role in the side, where he is in line to replace Mahela Jayawardene as the Lankan captain in the near future.

However, with modern-day all-rounders struggling to find the balancing act between ball and bat, especially in the longer version, Mathews remained eager to roll his arm over on a frequent basis in the looming series. With injuries often troubling him, the management has used him sparingly in the Test format, where he has usually been called upon to hold one end up.

Mathews, nonetheless, wants to make full use of his all-round prowess, especially on tracks which offer considerable pace and bounce to the fast bowlers.

"I've been managing myself on different conditions, and Mahela (Jayawardene) has been pretty good with that. In Australia, the conditions might suit my bowling and I'm hopeful of bowling plenty of overs."

?With the first Test starting tomorrow, at Hobart, the Lankan vice-skipper, further provided a fair insight to the playing XI. The major talking point is the opening combination, where Tillakaratne Dilshan is likely to be partnered by unknown Dimuth Karunaratne, who made a debut in the last series against New Zealand, managing scores of 0 and 60 not-out. That move means that Tharanga Paranavitana will miss out after string of poor outings with the bat.

"Dimuth is a very aggressive player, he always looks to score runs, while Paranavitana has been having a pretty bad run in the recent past. I think Dimuth has a slight edge, but we haven't decided on anything."
