The Brotherhood of Steel:
"The only salvation this tortured planet and its people have. Without us, humanity is sure to perish."

On the discovery of the true nature of the FEV(see super mutants) virus the head of security in Mariposa military base committed suicide under the pressure. As the second in command took control he ordered the families of the soldiers to take refuge inside the base and radioed out that him and his men had defected from the US military. They received no answer and two hours later the bombs dropped. On discovery that the radiation levels were not too severe he ordered everyone to migrant to the Lost Hills bunker far to the south. There the Brotherhood of Steel was founded with one goal: Survival.

They salvaged pre-war technology and kept it safe within their bunker and protected it from near constant assaults. As time passed and the NCR expanded the brotherhood grew weaker losing much of its power until the invasion of the Enclave. The scavenged technology helped the brotherhood greatly and NCR even gave up certain pieces of Enclave technology they deemed too dangerous though they still kept most of what they found. As time passed, leadership changed and much of the interpretation great Codex was changed. A brief civil war was fought within the brotherhood that ultimately killed what the brotherhood once was. Their goal changed to "Saving humanity from itself" by removing dangerous technology from the hands of those who they thought werent worthy to use it. They raided towns far and wide in search of technology which caused a long and bloody war with the NCR.

The Brotherhood enjoyed a considerable advantage during the early years of the war, as their advanced technology and high standards of training allowed them to inflict tremendous losses on the NCR's military. However, the NCR had a far larger pool of manpower from which to draw troops, while the Brotherhood remained a selective organization, allowing the NCR to easily replace it's losses while the Brotherhood became desperate. The Brotherhood fought fiercely, but in the end the NCR's numbers prevailed, and the Brotherhood forces were overwhelmed, forcing them into hiding. Having lost the surface, the Brotherhood prepared themselves to fight to the death as the NCR began to invade their bunkers. The Brotherhood did not die however. While much of the organization stayed in California to fight a guerrilla war against the NCR other chapters left in search of other goals.

One chapter set out east to the Mojave desert to attempt to beat the NCR to Hoover Dam. The Elder, Elijah, demanded they stopped at the Helios One solar power plant. The Elder then ordered that Helios(an extremely nonstrategic location) be made their base of operations despite the disapproval of his subordinates. The NCR quickly made an assault on the base after securing Hoover Dam and signing a treaty with Mr. House. The Elder disappeared and the Head Paladin ordered a tactical retreat to a nearby bunker. A lockdown was put in order trapping those who still outside at the time.

Another group in California, now known as the Circle of Steel, made a change in ideology and tactics. Unlike the rest of the brotherhood, they wanted a stake in wasteland politics and preferred stealth, espionage, and assassination over the power armored shock trooper tactics of the Brotherhood.
